anyone using a Holset HX-35 from a 94-02 Dodge Ram Diesel?

I have one of these turbos, currently running somewhere north of 35psi on it, daily basis...

but has anyone else run one of these turbos on their MK3? its a T3 flange, internally gated at 18-19psi, 4" inlet, anti-surge shroud, V-band outlet compressor, 3" outlet turbine, 12cm2 A/r Exhaust housing.

id like to hear about some power production numbers too, if possible.

I know from my DSM days that a LOT of people who were looking for GOOD power and the capability to push 30psi used the HX-35 and even the HX-40, but they made it in a mitsu flange... but from what i saw on the dyno's, they were good turbos for the $$$. Plus you can find them in a junkyard... whats better than that?

yeah... ive never really tried to go find a diesel turbo unless it was modified for gas engines like GReddy does.

Jon at MDC spoke positively of those turbos and they get a bad wrap being from diesels but he says they are great street turbos for the 7M. im just wanting to know what kind of power and spool characteristics people have seen w/ these turbos before i go thru any trouble of trying to put this on my car... and put the T88 on my truck... lol

I know of a lot of people running the HX35 in the Honda community with great success. /borat. It would be a good turbo for bigger HP numbers i think, probably for apps over 500hp. Keep in mind this turbo is designed to run on a 5.9liter 6cyl not a 3.0liter.

uh... i know it is. ;) i Have one, on my 5.9 liter 12valve cummins... again, pushing over 35psi on a daily basis.

The 6BT: My displacement is 363cid. my static compression ratio is 16.5:1. the governor in my injection pump limits fuel delivery to 2250rpm, redline is 3000rpm. My peak EGT's are 1100*F.

The 7MGTE: My displacment is 180cid. My static compression ratio is 9.5:1. I dont have a governor and my Redline is 6500. My Peak EGT's would be 1500*F.

So, since 7M has half the displacment and half the Static CR, but DOUBLE the RPM, that alone would create the same usable powerband (in theory). my higher EGT's would also help the spool-up characteristics. i mean, on paper, it would quite work WELL, but im just trying to find real-world results.

btw, Holset rates this turbo at 280hp on a diesel application. id say that it could be roughly doubled for a gasoline application assuming half the displacement, half the CR but double the RPM range. doubling the RPM range means that the motor wearing the HX35 could do Twice the work as a diesel for the same amount of torque produced. thats about 500tq on a diesel application, which is right about where i am on my truck.

uh yea i noticed you said you had a dodge cummins..
So..why dont you stick this turbo on your car?Other than the fact youd have to make a T4-T3 riser for the mani. It works well on 4cyl applications so i dont see why it would not work pretty well on a 7m.

well... im driving the truck daily since my car is making noises and im afraid i have to go thru the bottom end. i havent confirmed my suspicion so im in a holding pattern, but certainly not at a point to do more mods yet.

i do already have a T4 to T3 adaptor with a 38mm 2-bolt flange off the side of it... thats not a problem. i just havent done it because i dont feel like making a new downpipe and oil lines... id basically be robbing peter to pay paul by stealing the turbo off my truck.

if i get good feed back and see good #'s, ill just buy a spare holset to do eet.

Aphxero put one on a 1jz, MDC had(or has) a hx40 on his 7m, a good friend of mine will be putting one on a 1jz and I might also do this. Its a pretty decent turbo. Of the top of my head, it has a 61mm inducer and 102mm exducer on the cold side.

I know on the HY35 setup I had.... it was installed on a local supra here.

Full 18psi at around 3200 rpms. Very violent transition from vacuum to boost though.

-15 to +18psi in less than 100rpm so to speak.

Think makes around 400hp....

Now. The supra Im working on now will have the newer version of the HY35, the HE351CW (has the 90 deg snout).

It should make around 450 when all said and done.

Also, I have a HX60 here (flow around 110lbs / air) that is comparable to the GT47...

Jon- Know of any good places to get an HY35? I've been considering getting one for my 1jz for some time now. I'm thinking I'm ready now. PM me if you know of any. Thanks.

There are about 8 on there right now, but they are all not cheap. MDC, are there any other turbos that come from diesels and have a t3 footprint? Preferably ones that have 61-67mm inducers?

Here is my supra with the Hy35. I see boost at about 2800 rpm all the way up to boost cut at 4000 rpm. I have no problem taking it up to boost but I do have a problem keeping it from cutting out. I just got a maft and a 3.5 inch gm maf that im still waiting to get shipped on. The turbo is great actually for anyone on a budget. The only problem is smoking on startup, I see oil in the front of the turbo but I have no shaft play. Dont know whats up but it does go away after warm up.

You will need some custom pieces but they are not too hard to make if you can weld.

Free Turbo :biglaugh:
weld flange for downpipe
o2 weld flange
2 short radius 90-2" for external wastegate
adapter-There is some floating around ebay for mr2 t3 adapters
oil feed and return lines
external wastegate free a friend had it laying around
I think thats it.

I ignored my car for a while but when i got to working on it and had all the parts available it took a day of grinding, welding and fitting this turbo. Total i think i spent less than $200 and was a great replacement for a blown stock ct26.

Most diesel applications will be t3, to4, or t6 foot print.

Finding a turbo with a 61-67mm inducer on the compressor side in the diesel world?

Good luck. If you do, most likely it will have A MONSTER of a hot side with a giant turbine wheel attached to it.

well, lets not forget that most diesel applications routinely run high pressure ratios so they will have a wider trim variant. there will be quite a big difference between the inducer diameter and the exducer diameter.

can someone confirm the sizes of the HX35? id rather not go out to my truck and take the turbo apart... its easy but i just dont want to.

one thing i LOVE about driving my truck is that its SOOOOOO spooly. the antisurge housing (or Map width enhancement grooves) makes this turbo so noisey between 0-6psi. between 20-38psi, this thing WAILS like no bodies business. when i play around on the freeway in my truck, my turbo is louder than the ones on the semi-trucks when i pass them.

Compressor minor/major: 2.077"(52.75mm)/3.0645"(77.84mm)
Turbine minor/major: 2.2825"(57.98mm)/2.5670"(65.20mm)

This is the measurement for the Hy35. Should be the same if not similar to the HX.

thanks jon... maybe ill pick up a cheap HX off my diesel forums and use this MR2 adaptor i have. that could be a fun setup to experiment with. im really curious to feel it on the supra. and i can definitly understand the boost onset w/ that turbo...

my transient boost response is insane on my truck. when im at 1600rpms, cruising at 3-5psi, i can roll on the throttle and peg my 30psi guage before 1800rpms (if my TC clutch doesnt start to slip, which it does :( )
