In general, is there a point where offset would be more beneficial than tire width?

Is it sound to assume then having the lowest offset(without extending the cars geometry) possible with the widest tire permissable is the right combo.

I'm thinking of going 255s up front, and 275s in the back - but I'm worried about increasing the potential to hydroplane in the rain. Also, 275s all the way around just looks mean as hell ;) and GRIPS the road.

I run 255s BFG's all around now, and they are great. the sidewall is to tall for me right now(255/50/17), but that will be fixed soon. 275s all around would be SEX!!

The guy above is awesome, maybe I can ask his question more specifically. Technically, not in the right thread, the topic is an offshoot, which doesn't dictate it's own thread.

Option 1 - 265 35 18 on the front on a 18x9-38+ offset

Option 2 - 245 35 18(Maybe255 Depending on tire) with a 15mm spacer _________making it a 23+offset

Both have their benefits, but at what point does one outperform the other?

Cheers,

Matt-

I have a history of mis interpreting this stuff... so what do you mean by "outperform?"

Notice the dirt and spray that you'd end up with all over the fender.

^ meh, i don't drive the car in the rain, or in winter- so that's a non-issue for me.

fwiw, i'm running 275/40's out back, and 255/40's front, on MKIV TT rims.

for you guys on mkiv tt wheels. i have never had them and i was told you need a spacer or they rub on the struts? i dont see that happening, do you use spacers with the 275 on back and 255 up front? dont know to much about wheel fitment, and was thinking about getting some tt wheels.

MAN that's a HUGE tire for the front. it almost looks...wrong.

what kinds of cars run tires that big up front. vipers and vettes?

that woudl be illegal in my state, and i may not be questioned about it but i would rather roll the fender's

still good info i didn't know 275's would fit upfront!

i loved how she corned with 245's the extra 30mm should up corner speed by about 10-15mph no??

notice the salt spray from the winter tires that were on the car.

you would have to be crazy to drive with 275s up front in conditions like that....as the page states- TEST FIT. i.e. drive car in garage, remove existing tires, install 275s on front to see if they'll work.

Ok, so here's what I've decided on:

2003 Cobra wheels, polished face, anthracite (call it grey) backing, 255/50/17s all the way around.

I WILL be getting a pair of 275/40/17 Nitto 555rs, that I'll install on 2 spare wheels I'll be getting (identical 2003 cobra wheels, gonna buy 6 at once) - I'll do my 'test fitting' on those - and if they work out, then I can replace the 255s with 275s when they are ready to be replaced.

Seems the smartest way to go about it. 255s will still be better than damn 225s!

i have 17X9 +36 all the way around with 255 khumho mxs. the mxs are flush with the wheel i was worried the 275s would have to much baloonage and aparently i was right. but i definitly can see easily fitting a 275 on the front with a little more inset wheel. right now im pretty close to the sway bar on full lock tho

Depends on the tire. If you run BFG's, they tend to run a bit wider than most others. I have 255's on a 9" and it has no stretch but this is not always the case. I would suggest a 9.5" rim or a 265 if you want a square shouldered tire.

Your tire and wheel setup looks fantastic.

I have seen some pics like that. They look good.

I will still go with the JZA80 wheel, possibly 17 x 8 all the way around with 245's. It will be better than stock, and people that actually have the 17 x 9.5 for sale, they often act stupid. Like the wheel was made of gold or something.
