Time for some mythbusting, folks.

ABS is a great system, we all agree, right? So why is it that it hasn't dropped the number of accidents? Read this article: http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/vrtc/ca/lvabs.htm. A bit from it:

So, are people overconfident with ABS? Are they simply steering off the road and killing themselves with ABS, instead of skidding into the back of the guy in front of them and killing themselves? Have the brake systems improved significantly since they were introduced? If the last one is the case, we'd better be careful, because ours are definitely first generation ABS.

unfortunately, nobody can yet manufacture a device to account for the stupidity of the average person.

How can you hate abs? It never kicks in unless you hammer the breaks or really lose it. You hate the fact that you stop sooner?

People need to stop panicking in the car to cause all these locups. Also you need to consider traction based on a points system, if you steer while braking you have to reduce braking points to add those steering points. If you putting the brakes to the floor and cranking the wheel out of panic, ya you do need a computer to drive for you.

However, it seems people think abs is a must have and anyone that doesnt have it(my vehicles didnt come with it from the factory) must be an idiot for driving without. So I wont even bother this thread as I obvsious see my self as a super hero because I can brake safely and effectively without ABS and I prefer the feel of it.

We are saying its dumb to remove it. Not to not have it from the factory.

It really only comes on in a panic situation unless you are driving in snow or slick rainy roads. So you think in a flash you can regulate your braking to straighten out and stop better? is that what you are saying.

My abs has only kicked in once this summer. and that was when it was raining and I tried to stop too fast. So thats how little it is used. You can't say you prefer the feel of no abs because there is no difference in normal braking.

I think it has much more to do with the fact that people are simply idiots. They freak out stamp on the brake and just brace for impact instead of trying to make any attempt to control the car.

I would have to say thats because there are 28% more lucky idiots, 19% more unlucky idiots out there driving around then there was in the first place. It used to be you didnt have to worrie about idiots on the road because they were much more open, now with all the idiots out there you need ABS, Airbags, and all that other bullshit.

Im a firm believer in survival of the fittest, so i seriously think all those safety options should be taken out, if you cant not hit things and get killed you dont deserve the right to drive. Only part that sucks about that, is untill its full in effect and all the idiots are gone, you will have idiots killing good drivers and thats no good.

the feel? you don't feel ABS unless it kicks in. The threshhold is VERY high on our cars (which is good) but I'll give you a good example.

Going through a mountain road and I can see the switchbacks ahead of me and know nobody is coming up them, so I'm hitting them hard. I come into one hard and there is a branch in the road. I hit my brakes, the ABS kicks in to keep me from losing control while trail braking and I don't fall off the mountain.

Got it?

If you "don't need it" you're overlooking why it is fundamentally better than a normal braking system. That's like saying traction control is for idiots that can't control the gas.

Go ahead, tell IJ that wit his motec driven traction control...

These same system are why the evo is damn near the benchmark for handling these days...

So you were exceeding your limits on a dangerous road, panic and need the cars computer to save you. Yes, I see that you do in fact need abs.

my stock ABS saved me from wrecking my car, I'll be waiting for your "I totalled my supra today" thread

I didn't panic either, you're still not getting it...

your comment said much the same

unless you've been in a car with good working ABS (like the supra) you won't know what it can do

most modern cars have systems that get int eh way far too much...
