Fwiw I run my "small core 272s". (Lift similar to most 264s, but 272 duration) With stock cam gears. I only pull about -13 in at idle. my powerband is not great, I wish I went with machined usdm 2jzgte cams.
The local 2jz tuner has played with cam gear adjustments on the dyno and has been able to change the mid range and response a bit, but peak power never really changed with cam heat adjustments in his tests.

Bigger cams need adjustable cam gears and need to be degreed and set to the proper place with the cam gears in order to get them to work as designed. You will see poor results without doing so.

what's said above is true to some level and great rule of thumb, but from experience not degreeing cams means a lot less than you may think.
for instance, with the GSC and BC cams we installed on various customer 1J/2J cars (when I was still working in FL) we didn't notice any real change using the cams with stock cam gears set to the same positions as the stock units. they still made great power as long as they were properly installed.

Peak power will be better with 264s compared to 2j cams. But the response and low mid range will be better with the 2j cams. Now that i am drifting i want the low and mid range response.
Makes sense. I want peak power so I'm just gonna go with Brian crower 264s and have them degreed once I install them. My goal is 450whp gotta single 6262 walboro 255 12v mod aem v2 630cc injectors and pulled the motor to clean it up for spring so decided to do a little head work

Yeahh it depends on what you are really looking for, I was changing my valve stem seals and found a set of 2Jz cams from another member for $125 that where already machined and threw them in. Granted it may not have give as much power and such but I only spent like less than $200-$250 on the seal change and cams. I recommend changing valve stem seals, if you don't want to buy the tools you maybe able to "borrow" some from a member on the forums, I paid for shipping and a guy lent me everything I needed.
I ordered my stem seals the other day and I already have the Toyo tool and pliers for the seals. If I could fine already machined cams I would do that for that price too. What clutch do you recommend I think I'm getting a act xtss seems suitable for what I want
