So Cal
Okay I changed my turbo out because the old turbo on my 89 gave out it makes a winding sound like a nasty airplane I think the bearing gave out. Anyways I got an 88 CT26 and put it in but it feels like it has less power than the 89 ct26. I read that the 89 has a lil bit more power due to the wastegate acutuator being better on the 89. if this is true could I just switch out actuators and make my 88 ct26 just as powerful as the 89 or should I just rebuild my 89 ct26? I dunno... any clues? :1zhelp:

the change was so minor its doubtful that you would notice it. hows the boost build? are you still hitting the same boost numbers you were before?

as always check over your ic pipes for leaks (the one right off the turbo leaks like a bitch).

Your ass dyno isnt the most accurate piece of equipment. Are you running the same boost as you were before the turbo swap?(look at your boost gauge)

Boost gauge reads about the same.... but believe me once we changed it we can feel the difference... we never dynoed it this is based on what I've read.

Also all my hoses and ic pipes are fine. yes the difference is barely noticeable but I still want that lil bit of extra power. so can i do it.. can I just switch actuators?

Actually, it is. Flying by the seat of your pants is a pilots term, because many still say it is the best indicator. To be used in conjunction with gauges of course. :)

Dubs and JJ can comment, maybe I am wrong, but I don't think so.

To the subject, HP only went up 2, but torque went up 9 at the peak, and the 89+ does respond faster.

It's not that you're wrong it's just apples to oranges. And while seat-of-the-pants works well in small aircraft it doesn't in bigger ones like the CRJ. It certainly doesn't work in Jdub's 747. Put simply once you pass a certain weight and size the feel is gone and everything has to be done by numbers.

I am useing the stock boost gauge heheheh not very accurate... but anyways this all by feel like i stated earlier and boost reads the same but the 89 did feel a lil stronger.... so I think I will just switch actuators if thats all there is to it.

If you are using the stock boost gauge for this, chances are it's not reading fast enough to show the extra boost. The stock boost gauge is notorious for being slow.

The wastegate springs wear down over time, eventually they start opening way too early. They'll still hold the boost eventually, but you'll be leaking exhaust before you get there, so the horsepower curve will be weak looking.

A new wastegate actuator, or one that's in better shape, or shimming the thing, will fix it.

Thanks JJ.

I know the pickup point on the CT changed also. I don't know how much effect that has on the response, or even if that is an 89+ part. The actuator is. There is always the aftermarket, and a stiffer spring.

shims = ftw. easiest way to see if its really a weak actuator or something else. plus will give you a lb or 2 more boost

From what I can tell the ass dyno normally mistakes torque for horse power. I used to know this guy who insisted his bone stock 1988 mercury cougar had about 300hp because of the ass dyno.
