I have a 86.5 n/a... but i thought this might work better in general because i figured a turbo 7m probably doesnt sound much different from a N/A one. (EDIT) turns out i was wrong. so this only applies to N/A engines...sry

basically i was wondering what i can do with the stock exaust to get a nice tone...and something that isn't ear-damaging loud, without spending much money (under 50 bux). I think i have an aftermarket muffler and it sounds a little raspy in the higher RPM's and when revving. i'd like to see if i can make it better.

someone once told me he removed the muffler and went with a straight exaust pipe in the back...i am fairly sure the rest of his exaust was stock; the resonator and maybe the cat were still there. i've also been told that removing the resonator makes it sound like crap; and i wont do that anyway.

so basically; i was curious if anyone has removed their muffler and replaced it with a straight pipe or a long exaust tip....how does it sound? i'll ask more about what's best if in fact this works...

if it does sound good, does it get really loud? (obviously it will be louder...but how loud i dont know for sure)

and yes i DID try and remove my clamped-on muffler and used some wd-40 like stuff to lube it and try and slide it off....but since it got crimped all i could do was spin it and make it look lopsided, it wouldnt come off. so i cant just try it myself, or i would. if this does work i might have an auto shop pull it for me and listen to it for myself if convinced on here.

if anyone has an audio clip of an N/A without the muffler and WITH the resonator please post it!

here is a picture of what i have right now...and the view right next to it.

From my personal experience there is a difference in exhaust note between the 7mge and 7mgte. The turbo itself actually muffles some of the exhaust sound. If you want cheap, but dont want it to be too loud, DO NOT go straight pipe. You will want to shoot yourself. I would reccomend cutting off the rear stock muffler and replace it with something aftermarket. Should add some sound without being too loud and on the cheap$$.

that makes sence on the turbo. and you're taking into account that the resonator is still included right? i'm not going FULL straight ever... just making sure.

Yes, even with the stock resonator on, it will still be LOUD. I would just have an aftermarket cheapo muffler welded onto the end and call it a day.

I personally put some square style mufflers on my car. Example flowmaster, edelbrock, etc. It seems to me the chamber style mufflers baffle the sound a lot more and its a lot less raspy, then a round can. Either put one similar to the stock muffler and add a tip for looks, if you wish. Or, you can put a typical round one on. Either way should be pretty cheap.

For your setup, a Flowmaster 2-Chamber would sound good. Deep, throaty and not like a tin can. Also MAgnaflow could get what you wanted but it depends on what type of tone you are looking for.

Back when I had a MKII, I had flowmasters and it sounded like a small 8 cylinder...but it obviously was not.

hmm... they all sound kinda spendy. (just got through with bhg so my wallet hurts)

i might price around and see exactly what they cost though...i havent ever really done that for just a muffler.

so i'm guessing the straight pipe idea is a bad one. lol

chambered mufflers FTL.

Magnaflow straight through 2.5" in, dual 2" out, or single 2.5" out.

I have a magnaflow 2.5" in dual 2 out and I hate it...I would not recommend it. It sounds great at idle and above 4k is sounds good, but from about 2.5k-4k is sounds sick (and not in a good way). I have heard alot of people with the unchambered dual outs say they have the same problem as me so if you go with a single out it might be ok...but dont get a dual out.

Maybe, just MAYBE a chambered muffler wouldn't be so bad on an NA, but I'd be inclined to put a glasspack behind it to smooth out the pulses.... I dunno... never been a fan of chambered mufflers I guess.

A single glasspack would be alright IMO... they make 2.5" glasspacks anywhere from 12" to like 40".. no lie.

A glasspack alone will sound like complete human excriment. I say put on a chambered muffler. I think it gives it a nice tone, without being over the top loud. We are talking about the 7mge here. If it is too loud for you then add aglasspack somewhere in the sytem. I think if you source a cheap chamber style muffler and have it added to the end you will be pleased.

Unless you already have a decent muffler and a welder, I don't see anyone spending less than $50 to get an exhaust. That's outrageous. I thought spending acouple hundred $$$ in total was a cheap way to go...

Anyways, Don't know if you consider this cheap or not, but with an NA, go buy one of those mufflers from Autozone (like $59.99), yes, it's an actual muffler (not just a tip). Cut off your stocker, have the new one welded on...and if all you are going for is a bit louder and an actual SOUND coming from your exhaust, that's the best way to go (for cheap). And it's not all that loud either, but definately has a nice tone to it.

allright. thanks a lot that will help. my muffler is actually not welded on...it has a U-clamp thing holding it. looks good enough and i should in theroy be able to remove it but its crimped itself and doesnt want to slide off... if it would have worked for a straight pipe i would have had a shop remove it for me...they probably have a tool or better leverage than i do...

i am on a really low budget...thats why i was going for the insanely low limit. i wouldnt think on my own that it would actually work but someone told me it did on here and i wanted another opinion. glad i got it!

well here's the kind of post that makes me wonder! everybody buys new mufflers but i wonder if maybe its just that nobody thinks to try removing the restrictions. but then again everybody ahs different tastes and i've heard it sounds like crap w/out a resonator.

isn't it LOUD though quapouh!? i wish i could find an audio clip of a GE without the muffler.

OK. I think you are missing the point. GE and the GTE sound totally different, believe it or not. If you want to go ahead and run a straight pipe, then do it. When your ears bleed profusely, then youll probaly wish you had just taken the advice that has been given to you repeatedly. Cut your rear most muffler off, start your car, and listen. Then, work from there...
