A really responsive turbo is a HKS 2835 56T

Made 280rwkw on 16PSI (380HP) which im sure with a bit more boost can make your 400HP +

Good info in this thread! What we can take from it, is that there are a lot of ways to get from 'here to there'.

I've decided on a BW 200SX-56 turbo on my 1J with a matching T4 twin scroll manifold. Dual Tial 38mm wg's. I'm after the same goals the OP mentioned in the first post. 400-450 WHP with excellent 'factory-twinlike' response.

To each their own, I'm all about different! The more proven combinations and real-world examples and setups there are, the better!

Probably not gonna make 450whp with that turbo :/

Good choice going with BW and twin-scroll though.. you should do the S360 with the .91 T4 twinscroll housing.

You are correct it would seem. I had it in mind that the S256 flowed the same as the 30R, but it is far more substantial. In fact, it it closer to the 35R than the S360, and most likely has better response since the S360 more or less matches the 35r spool characteristics.

If I didn't have a goal of 500+whp, I'd likely swap mine out for that.

I'll be sure to post up progress and end results with the build. It really is response and on-street drivability that I'm after (and the OP as well) - the turbo choice nearly took 3 weeks of reading and examining compressor and turbine maps of about 25 different units. I have high but reasonable expectations. And for the money?! $630 for a brand new BW turbocharger? Incredible!

I've seen(online) only a couple of 1J setups with this turbo, but not much out there for details. I hope to draw my own conclusions and report back! (with some help of the good community here!)

Ya bw are not to big on the 1j crowd. They really good power on rotarys tho.

My next turbo will be a s360.

Running a S200SX myself actually, and i'm very satisfied with the spool and response. Very similar to stock twins, but with a lot more power at 4500+ rpms.
But I unwisely choose the 51mm, not the 56mm. The 51mm "falls off" at only 47lbs/min, so i'm limited to ~400whp
Mine is with a .75 A/R T3 Twinscroll footprint from AGP-Turbo, but response is quite good though....even on stock ECU i'm on 10 PSI at 3000RPM's and 13 psi at 3300. Positive pressures are seen around 2000 (Spool has started), and absolute no problems so far.

Thumbs up for the S-series!

Looks good! Do you have any dyno results of your setup? The S200s I've found seem to be in different chassis's and used for drifting ^^^, as the response is superb! I'll be using the T4 Twinscroll with the 1.22A/R. Basically, the largest of the S200 series (as built by Borg Warner, not pieced together by a third party) to prevent choking, maxing out too soon, and to get the HP I'm after. (...and those 1/4 mile times...lol)

Sorry for the slight thread hijack, OP!

Oh...im sorry to dissapoint you, but the 1.22 housing will be super laggy on your 1J... just watch this video; 1J with 1.22A/R S256 in a Bmw;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT-0FM77Pp8

Dynosheet comes at the end of the video... not very good IMO.

Haven't dyno'd my yet.... Will be doing that next season, but its probably ~280-300whp at 13Psi on stock ecu.

I saw that video before actually, and I'm not convinced the turbo is the issue. Not quite sure what's going on with his setup but it should spool much faster than in that particular video. I don't expect to be disappointed, nor do I trust just one person's BMW...lol! I hope not, anyway. ;) We'll find out in the Spring! If there were more real-world-experience with this exact turbo and the 1JZ that would be great to see. Basically, I'm 'trying it out'. According to BW's specs, it appears to be an ideal match for my goals.

Make no mistake, Radial, I DO appreciate the guidance and concern, I will re-explore the large turbine A/R once more! You DO have one more single-turboe'd 1JZ than I do, after all... lol! Rest assured, I'll post my results and experience, good or bad, once it's running. :)

Any other suggestions for the thread?

I was researching and asking around about the S256 somewhat and came across the S259, which seems to flow slightly more with near identical response to the 56. Both of these turbo's exhaust housing options don't please me too much though (T4 undivided mani for my setup).

I had the s360 on my 1JZ and it was extremely responsive. I now have it on my 2JZ and now my car feels like a big v8.

that's awesome! I need to get mine on the dyno.

What type of housings did you use? (Compressor/turbine, sizes) -the S360 comes in so many versions now...billet's, different turbines and housings.

I got the standard 83-75 compressor housing and the .91ar turbine housing. This turbo is awesome on the 1JZGTE. I am now wishing I had gone with the 88-74 turbo though. I didn't know that I would have ended up with a 2JZGTE.

Will a T3 with 70 ar. compressor and 63.a/r turbine cause boost creep even with 50mm wastegate? I found that my newgen 50mm wastegate was leaking so I'm putting in a JGS 50mm and retesting. But I'm wondering since my backhousing is small will it cause boost creep even with a 50mm wastegate?

That T3 .63ar housing is extremely small though. If you don't experience creep the 50mm wastegate, you will choke in the mid to topend.

Yea, the genius before me slapped on the worst setup, I hope it doesn't creep but anyways im saving up for a precision SC6162.
