Hi Guys,

This is technically my first post on this my first official post on this forum and want to thank you all in advance for any helpful support you can provide...
I have a 92' Supra Turbo that my dad gave me and drove it until around 140K Miles before the head gasket blew which I saw coming...

Now I am in the stage of restoring it and here is my gallery...

It is an automatic unfortunately and will start with a head gasket replacement then restore everything from here...
It has been sitting for almost 2 years, and know mostly every rubber piece will need replacement, along with complete suspension kit and brakes...
I am just asking for some advice on where to start...

Is a FELPRO Head Gasket Kit good? I have no doubt in my mind that the engine head will be needing some machining so that will get done...
I have a trustworthy mechanic doing the repairs and will definitely do the timing belt change while the head is off, but is a new water pump necessary? What else would I need to do while the engine head is off?
I plan to do some upgrades such as a new turbo kit with a new FMIC as the stock one seems to suck, and all necessary bolt ons...
I would be more than happy with 400-500hp, and have considered a 1JZ or 2JZ upgrade, but they are expensive and don't pass US Emissions since I live in Maryland, US...
Also will eventually switch to a manual R154 5 speed transmission...

I am not rich but will be dumping several hundred dollars every two weeks into this and will appreciate any upgrade/repair advice that I can get...

Latest update of picture gallery...

oem toyota head gasket is the best type to use if you are not going to put a mhg. If u decide mhg u need to machine the block AND head, otherwise the mhg will NOT seal.

Thanks, also I know there was a torque spec issue with everything stock... Would you recommend ARP Studs with the stock replacement? And would it be good for future upgrades to 400-500HP?

yessss i almost forgot, thats a must. Im pretty sure u can order a set of arp studs off that same website. Driftmotion is A++ i ordered hundreds of dollars of parts from them Aaron at Driftmotion is a great guy to deal with. Arp will give u some lube and set torque setting so just follow the instructions that they give u w/ w.e specified lube.

And on a stock oem head gasket i think 500 would be pushing it. I believe devin was making 400ish hp for a while until he finally blew it.. If ur set for power, just go mhg and dont look back. You wont have to worry about the dreaded head gasket issue if u do it right with a mhg and arp's.

For a stock headgasket bolts are fine and should be torqued to 72ft-lbs and not 58 as specified in the manual.

Glad to see another one being brought back.

you could do 1j swap for under 3k if you do your own work.

Yeah but I live in Maryland, and does not meet US emission requirements and has to get it done every 2 years...

And a 1JZ, with manual swap requires wires to be extended since they are all right hand driven cars taken from a front end clip right?

Welcome to SM, sounds like you have a lot of reading on here to benefit from. If you're worried about emissions, a 2jz *should* be able to pass smog in most places (they're legal in CA, if done properly), so don't put it off the table if it's an idea you're fond of. ;)

EDIT: A 1j CAN meet emissions, even in California and Arizona, however... if you're up against visual inspection Nazis like they have in CA, you will likely run into headaches. If it's just a sniffer test, not too hard to make them pass.

true its same here in cali. Well don't you want 400-500hp? that defientky wouldn't pass emissions. And as far az extending the harness you can drill a whole on the driverside firewall and run it under dash to stock ecu location. its a cleaner look and your harness won't get as brittle and hot if you were to extend and run it like oem 7m harness. you still will have to change body plugs no matter if you go 1j or 2j.

Either way you'll have to go through the harness. if you dont extend it, itll save you few bucks.

Nothing wrong with an auto... especially if you're keeping the power level to 500ish. The few mods necessary to ensure the tranny can handle the power while performing well are much less expensive than a manual conversion. And the plus-side? have chance to go fast, mash throttle, uninterrupted power to redline through all gears.

Beautiful MK3 btw

and I pressed previous too many times and saw your dual nvidia geforce cards. very nice =D

Thanks guy, I will definitely be starting with an OEM head gasket with ARP studs, timing belt, water pump, and a complete rubber/hose replacement...
Once up and running, I will focus on new paint and rim restoration and try to keep it a stock look and maybe lowering a bit...
Unfortunately the paint is oxidizing on the top around the sunroof area and hood...
xzeror, I like how low your profile Supra is... what suspension do you use because I am thinking of getting rid of TEMS...

Here are some pictures I just took today with the interior...
Didn't even know the interior was called shadow grey lol...

I appreciate all the help again, and will keep you guys posted on my progress with more pictures and videos...
LOL @ my computer as it shows my geek side...

It's a 92! I would not swap motors if I were you. There were only about 1100 92's ever imported to America. How many are left, nobody knows. Your car is very rare and deserves all of the demand it gets. A true collector will want it to be as close to original as it can be. Stay 7M, and only do bolt ons that you can reverse if the price gets crazy one day. See my sig for a lowered 92 3E5 Red.

Let me know if you would like to join the 92 owners group. I will send you an invite.

One mod you can do that cost nothing but time and should be done asap is to remove those fender guards above the tires. All they do is hold in debris and water and cause the quarters to rust. I bought a mint condition Supra (I thought it was mint) with those installed. This car had been garaged for 20 years. I even told the guy I bought it from when I bought it that he was lucky that the quarters didn't rust with those on. Well when I got home and pulled them off it was all rusted underneath them even though you could not tell with them on.

I had a very very bad experienced with this guy and got screwed. I've heard the same from others. I would not suggest dealing with him. If you must, don't expect refunds for any mistakes on his end.
