Well, I've been reading this forum for a while, and ended up getting a project car for myself. I'm a 41 year old father of 3, so this is definetly a long term project. I owned an 88 Turbo targa back in 1990-1993, and loved it. I ended up selling it at the time because of a new baby, and the problems I was having with the car. Know I know it was a BHG thaks to all of the great information on this site.

I decided to sell a snowmobile this year for health reasons, and replace it with a project car. I alway wanted to tear one down since I was a kid. I found this 88 7mgte 5 speed for $600. It was supposedly leaking oil from around the crank. It had pieces taken out already, and no water in it. The engine would run, and I did not see a leak. I was tearing it down anway, so why not.

So far, I've enjoyed it. I'm trying to keep it a hobby. I'm at the point where I will be needing some advice soon, so I figured I'd better get my build thread going! So, here I go.

The exterior needs a paintjob.

Here are pic's of the engine as I received it. I was able to drive it on a trailer and then up my driveway. It came with a few parts in a box!

When I started taking it apart, I saw the plugs were swimming in oil. Either the cam covers were leaking, or the 3 bolts colding the cam cover 3 were leaking (saw this in a thread here earlier this week, thanks again.)

Thanks for all of the responses. I can feel the love!

As far as my plans. basically I want to get it running. Not looking for high HP on this one. I don't want to purchase all forged parts if I can't pull it off. The body is in good shape. I need at least one wheel bearing, hoses, etc. All electronics seeam to work. I would like to be able to use this to run all of my 'errands'. Take the kids to lessons, practices, grab a few groceries, etc. It will not be a daily driver (so far). Just driving it all summer. If it runs for a few months, then I may paint it and sell it in order to get a Targa Top project. It all depends on my results and if I do in fact enjoy the entire process!

I'll post more pictures later this week.

Set reasonable goals, take your time, ask alot of questions and enjoy the process. Looks like a good base to start from.

ALRIGHT! So I'm not alone. That's good to hear that I'm not the only over 25 guy here. Got a kick out of the posts.

So, back to the pictures. Here is the engine bay w/o the engine. Think I'll clean it up a bit. If I get this running, I'll probably get it painted. The wife thought my powder puff blue Supra was a cute color.....
The bolt for the oil pump shaft snapped off, so I'll have to have that removed.

Here is a pic of the crankshaft keyway. It was all chewed up and bent out the left side. I had to grind down the lip that was pushed up, in order to get the crank pulley off.

The Turbo compressor looks a little worn. The blades look burnt, the edges are chewed up, and the shaft has so mush play it almost touches the sides. Front to rear it did not move hardly at all.

Hoooray from another oold guy! For a moment I thought you got a better deal than what i got mine for, but congrats on your new project. I say rebuild it to stock with mhg, intake, exhaust and boost controller, maybe an intercooler; that would be better and more reliable than a quadrazillion whp Supras I keep reading about.

The cold start injector and intake runners had a lot of oil in them. Not sure if this was from the the turbo bearings going bad or not. I will be replacing the injector, and getting a rebuilt stock trim CT26 for now. The regular injectors appeared OK. I'll be checking the resistance of them later on.
