I still get a laugh each time I read a thread where someone tips the can for the dyno and posts up that they're running 14psi and NEED the hi octane fuel.....

Best power always comes from a fuel with just enough octane to resist detonation unless you're talking Nitro (aka HP in a can)

I personally wouldn't like to squeeze out every bit of power a certain octane has to offer, there's always that "if" that could happen and cause detonation. 11.5-11.7 A/F gives you a little bit of a cusion.

Read the link JJ provided. It will clear many things up. It is long, so you that don't read and just look at pictures will not like it.

There's not that much HP to be found running a motor too lean and on the edge of detonation but you can pick up quite a bit through ignition advance and this is where the Octane plays a huge part.

I tend to tune "safe" these days and run quite conservative timing under boost but the fuel I use LOVE huge timing off boost.

Yea, I attempted to read it... and saw how long it was... and the way the info was presented... and didnt read it. lol. 10 pages to get an answer wasnt worth it :p

But I finally get how this fuel stuff works :p.
So, in theory, running premium in my N/a is worse for it then unleaded?

The owners manual states premium for increased performance. Toyota uses a closed loop ignition circuit. That means the computer is responding to its own control. While not as advanced as a new 1MZ-FE, the ECU will advance timing if you don't have knock to retard it.

Where you live also affects what fuel you "need". A 7MGE in Denver, or other high cities, really doesn't need 91 or higher. You are flushing money down the toilet. You will never get enough cylinder pressure to warrant the fuel.
