What was the extra metal on the firewall for? Is that just there to shield the cabin from heat?

What extra metal are you referring to? The firewall is stock I haven't done anything to it.

The dash has a very thick sound mat, other then that I took off all the mounting tabs for things like the evap box, blower motor, etc.
