7MGTE Ticking?

When I drive my car I can hear it tick from the exhaust side. It's not a knock, just a tick tick tick when giving it gas. I did the 2000-3000 rpm test and no knock was present. I checked my manifold studs and one is stripped, all the others seem fine. Also under boost, a squeaking noise begins. Do you guys think its the beginning of rod knock or just an exhaust leak? Thanks for all the replies.

Could also be the valve lash out of spec.

Squeaking noises under boost? Squealing>? Whining? Could be a belt or could be the turbo going out.

squealing, as the boost increases. I was pretty sure it was an exhaust leak as well, it started making the ticking noise after the squealing.

Yeah i remember having that a long time ago on the last engine but didn't look into it as i got another engine. How long has the engine ran for?

Similar issue here. The ticking is loudest on start up. When it warms up a little it almost goes away. I'm hearing it a bit on acceleration. Still not sure from where exactly it comes from. I'm betting on the valves. As soon as they will be adjusted, i can confirm or decline that.

Take a stethescope (or vacuum line or wood stick or solid screwdriver, they all work) to your engine and you'll hear if it's mechanical pretty easily. Put it on different parts of the engine and where it's loudest is where it's coming from. Valve covers/head you can move around and even find what areas of the valvetrain have a bit more play than others. If you can't find a tick from the top end, stick it on an injector. I thought I had some valve tick (I'm super paranoid with engine noises after having a BHG) and it was just the injectors. They can be really bloody loud.

Also typical of an exhaust leak. As the metal heats up it expands and seals up minor leaks. Places to check would be manifold to head gasket, manifold to turbo, turbo to elbow, elbow to downpipe, o2 sensor, egr cooler (back of the head), and the egr valve on the intake side. Theres quite a few places exhaust can leak out. Exhaust leaks will be loudest as you snap the throttle open

And +1 to stethoscope if you think it is a noisy valvetrain.

I had the same problem one time. Ticking on idle, squealing under boost. Turned out to be a wornout exhaust manifold gasket.
Change that first since you already know you have an exhaust leak. If that fixes it good. If not then worry about what else it could be.

All the gaskets on the exhaust related components are new. A few monts old. I'm pretty sure that the ticking is from the engine. My old engine did not tick. The new(swaped) one - does. Anyway, no big deal, apart from ticking, ewerything esle is fine. I will be running this engine only untill i rebuild my old one. Then i'll drive it as hard as i can, knowing that i have another one waiting in the garage.

Why not pop the vavle covers, grab a feeler gauge, and measure your clearances? Any that are out of spec, replace the shim with a correct size one to put it back to clearance. Rids the valvetrain tick.

The condition of the engine was/is unknown. I'm not thinking about overhaulin it even if it's a r/k. I have another engine, almost completely finished overhauled, sitting in the garage. Just wanted some other opinions regarding the engine noises.

hard to tell over the web but I'd venture valve lash. If its RK, its not keeping up with engine rpms. You can count it each time it "ticks". Valve lash would be ticking at 1/2 engine rpm. When its only a valve or two out, you can almost count each time it "ticks" near idle and coming off idle. Rk reminds me of a snare drum role and very metallic sounding.. just to damn hard to say over the web though.

I'm betting on the valves. Or maybe, there's smth we forgot to tighten when we swaped engines. Later i will post a vid on the cold engine. it's more noticeble then. I don't think it's a r/k. It's not the same noise as i heard on other r/k's. Well, maybe it's a start of r/k. Time will tell.

Use a a stethoscope (or rubber tube, or broom handle, or screwdriver, etc) will tell you really quick where it's coming from. I'm just sayin ;)

hmmm sounds different to my ticking. Sounds pretty loud for a ticking. The last thing in the list I'd want to say is RK.
