7M-GTE Engine Response

I can think of several things...

Lightened internals(pistons, crank, etc) and flywheel; the less mass you have to motivate, the faster the response.
Individual throttle bodies along with a large plenum and the shortest intake tract possible.

Thanks for the input Ry. Sorry I didn't specify. I know of those things, but I'm more interested in knowing how to REALLY get it to respond similar to the one on the video. There are quite a few 7Ms with the components listed above which do no respond this way.. One thing you left out was ECU. I would think this is a critical one as it can be tuned for the engine's "sweet spot".

No doubt the ECU plays a part in it, but I think that's a supporting mod (regarding response), that will allow you to reap the full benefit of the parts and setup you already have.

I'm honestly not sure how important exhaust is to throttle response, especially with a turbo, but I'm sure it does matter.

How many 7M-GTEs have you seen with ITBs? I'm pretty sure indv. throttles would have a drastic effect on response, but I haven't heard of anybody yet with that setup on the the GTE...

It'd be very hard for us to make our engine as responsive as that 4 rotor wankel; much much less moving mass than we could reasonably hope to achieve with a straight six. Plus, its naturally aspirated.

Don't forget the lightened driveshaft! Pretty much any unsprung weight will help you rev faster or at least make the car "lighter on its feet".

No, ITBs on a 7M-GTE, I haven't seen that except on my drawing board for my car :naughty:

I don't know all the technicalities, but Exhaust Speed is crucial for response and power. I believe you need to maintain exhaust speeds at a certain speed in order to generate the most power and response from the engine.

That's why the exhaust ports on a cyl head, pretty much any head, are smaller then the intake ports.

Emilio - Certainly!!! That's an important one. I don't know exactly how much lighter then can get it. I've heard of the 7M crank's weight lowered to almost 6lbs! The 6M crank on the 7M motor is actually just over 5lbs lighter then the 7M crank because it doesn't have two of the center balancers, so that could be made lighter, but not as smooth on the higher RPMs.

The 7M is also undersquare, will that effect its ability to rev quickly? That and of course having a turbo to spin at the same time will kill throttle response if not properly sized for the job. I can't imagine moving even remotely quickly through LagLand up to spool, no matter what turbine is on it.

An apple will always be an apple and oranges hmmm i m sure u know what i was about to say ....... You can destroke the the 7m like bigaarons project or get a smaller stroked engine like a 1jz

Umm maybe a 50-75 shot or some higher gears or better yet both? Then you have to overcome the lack of traction sounds like fun. But seriously who cares about the engine speed ..... I rather have a good trap speed at :) at 7000rpm

it's not possible really... that ressponse is much like a motorcycle's because the rotating assembly is so damn light...

Have to take into account the pistons, rods, crank, flywheel (and clutch!), front pulley, and accessories...

The wankel is made for that kinda response and revs...

That Video reminds me of one with the Mazda 787B the Le Mans 24Hr monster... its a rotary for starters and they are known to be very rev snappy.. but it comes at a price of Torque?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Go3Fgd1wgic

Check that clip of the 787B Quad Rotor... crowd goes nuts...

Interesting too on that note about the 787B....

"why Legend? 1.The first (and only) Japanese manufacturer race car to win in Le Mans 24 hours endurance race in 1991. 2.the first (and only) overall victory for a car powered by a Wankel rotary engine. 3.After 1991, this car has been banned from entering Le Mans 24 hours race because FIA(Federation Internationalr de l'Automobile) outlawed the use of Wankel-type rotary engines in the racing series due to "unfair weight advantages""

Ohh wow now we have apples and oranges and grapes lol a pistons motor vs rotary and then we include a bike ..... Bikes are a lot lighter internal b/c they are only 2 pistons and they are very small and the same thing goes for a rotary. However the rb26 and 1jz rev like crazy.

Again you want to rev like that? Sure its possible de-stroke the 7m cut as much weight off the crank as you can before it becomes un useable and buy the lightest parts possible from the engine to the wheels and everything in between.

eh.

it's a combination of rotating mass and proper engine management.

on my old setup w/a light FW, super short intake tract and timing bumped up across the entire low end, it was VERY snappy.

Yea dr i can i see that but i am sure it wasn't like that 13b

You guys remember that old clip of the r34 skyline vs the mkIV? Anyways it was 500hp or 600hp r34 vs 400hp mkIV .... The driver made a comment about how responsive the rb26 was while in 6th gear he said it raved like it was in first.

I cant say any 7m supra's have that type of feel ..... No matter what you do. The motor isn’t designed that way blame it on the old truck motor design

Yes I do I have that video on my computer.

That's an apples to orange comparison if I've ever seen one. It's extremely obvious that the skyline was MUCH more modified than the Supra was.

I agree and as I stated the big power difference..... The point I am making is that our M series was never designed to be a quick and high revving engine shit it was never originally designed to be turbo but it still works. Anyways it not impossible to transform the characteristics of the motor but is it really worth it? Bigaaraon is doing it currently lets see how his results come out in the long run.
