Sup guys? im new to this forum and am a big participant in supraforums. I'm in the process of rebuilding the motor after a BHG. I have this posted on SF as well and want to share it with everyone here. I will go through the entire process with pics and whatnot. To the point

started tearing it apart to replace the BHG. So far its a PITA but its commin along. the guy that built it kinda pisses me off. he put the liquid gasket crap on the intake chamber to the manifold. things are chipped and the studs have come outta the head with the nut still on on some smaller things. random stuff as i go through.

This is before i touched anything.

p1156431_1.jpg

thats what the coolant looks like

p1156431_2.jpg

Mhmmm

p1156431_3.jpg

and it continues......

p1156431_4.jpg

p1156431_5.jpg

theres that liquid gasket crap on the intake chamber

p1156431_6.jpg

theres so many dam hoses, lines and wires everywhere

p1156431_5.jpg

and thats the progress for the first day.

p1156431_8.jpg

........End of the first knuckle bust session

couldn't sleep so i went down and start wrenching for like 4 hours or so just taking my time. everythings so dam ditry and ugh....

finally got the fricken intake chamber off

p1156431_9.jpg

BHG might be in the 6th cylinder maybe...

p1156431_10.jpg

p1156431_11.jpg

next is the ignition coil removal.

p1156431_12.jpg

mhmmmm i see some oil in 5 and more predominantly in 6

p1156431_13.jpg

next is the cam position sensor and the thermostat

p1156431_14.jpg

p1156431_15.jpg

the turbo gaskets are like a brittle old man. flaking upon the wind blowing.
p1156431_16.jpg

and thats the end of this session.

p1156431_17.jpg

...............End of 2nd wrist snapping wrenching session

so i get back home , and decide to take the turbo off, so after 40 minutes of knuckle bleeding cursing at the tight wrench space it pops off. and look what i found..................... hooray, a cracked exhaust housing.
i measured it and its a hair short of a sixteenth of an inch back and forth shaft play.

p1156432_1.jpg

p1156432_2.jpg

p1156432_3.jpg

and on top of that, the bottom oil tube is so anciently heat rotted that i have to replace it, and as i go through the motor, i haven't had to use penetrator or hardly any elbow grease to get shit loose. nothing is torqued down to what it is supposed to be. can't wait till i get to the fricken head. the turbo bolts were prob at about 10ftlbs.................WTF?
im beggining to think that the guy that bulit this car short cutted so bad is some areas.

EDIT: or just forgot to retorque everything
p1156432_4.jpg

oh and get this, the radiator hose on the right side of the motor is pinched to about 50 % of its normal capacity between the intercooler piping and one of the mounts.
p1156432_5.jpg

and where it goes to the water pump, its squished on there so uneededly much..
p1156432_6.jpg

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

..................End of the third engine punching session

last leg of the teardown. I got it to where all i have to do is take off the timing belt and unbolt the head and pop it off.

well, as promised, things like this happened and the two dissimilar metals expanded and contracted with the heat and the aluminum pretty much welded itself to the bolt........
p1156432_7.jpg

the intake manifold was kinda sticky taking it off. and the #6 intake port looks extremely mukked up
p1156432_8.jpg

heres a close up

p1156432_9.jpg

there is fricken oil everywhere....
p1156432_10.jpg

p1156432_11.jpg

p1156432_12.jpg

AND Low and behold i see the ARP stamped on the bolts staring back at me!!!
p1156432_13.jpg

i checked the torque on them and they are at ~90

and the plugs are just ugh..............all around.
p1156432_14.jpg

..........End fourth session

here are the pics of the front of the upgraded turbo
p1156437_1.jpg

p1156437_2.jpg

So after getting a breaker bar and a 8 foot pipe, i got all the headbolts off.
and heres whats up.

steam cleaned piston..................
p1156437_3.jpg

like perfectly cleaned piston.
p1156437_4.jpg

and then the head gasket.
p1156437_5.jpg

p1156437_6.jpg

p1156437_7.jpg

p1156437_8.jpg

p1156437_9.jpg

p1156437_10.jpg

p1156437_11.jpg

..................End 5th session

< and now for the rebuilding part and parts collecting and cleanup.

Alright, just got the head back from the shop. They did awesome work and cleanup on it. I had them helacoil some bolts on the exhaust side and they made the gasket sealing surfaces so smooth.

p1156437_12.jpg

p1156437_13.jpg

p1156437_14.jpg

p1156437_15.jpg

p1156437_16.jpg

and on the #2 piston from the front it looks as if the bearing blew on the rod and the piston was hitting the head, but thats the reason the motor was rebuilt in the first place because there was and is no signs of rod knock or anything related to that bearing blow. i checked the piston as well, and it was replaced with a new piston because there was no signs of anything on it. i triple checked the pistons up and down motion for it to be exactly equivalent to the matching piston down the block.

p1156437_17.jpg

so now i wait patiently for all the new parts. im going to go to the HW store and buying new nuts and bolts and also anything else i need to rebuild the beast.

This is where i am at as of today. I picked the head up this afternoon and have just ordered most of the parts for the upper motor rebuild.

Ordered parts list.

Denso iridium spark plugs
Hose techniques kit red
Cam sensor dust cover and gasket
Silla replacement radiator
Red Silicone high heat radiator hoses
Beck arnley timing belt
Hood struts
Felpro Head gasket set

total = $685

shop cost for the head tune up and test $175

plus the nuts and bolts $75
all the brake and carb cleaner $15
14 t bolt hose clamps $40.99
red intercooler pipe couplers to go with the new intercooler next paycheck
knuckle busting wrench time $ow
the look on the mustang guys face when i completely demolish his point of living........... priceless

looks like a fun little BHG job ya got on yours hands. double check the valve clearances!!! and if you can, measure the head to see how thick it is so you can buy a aftermarket metal headgasket.

Good to see you on this side. Check out the Mideast Regional Forums...there's a few of us there as well.

Hope to see you around and good luck with the build! :bigthumb:

Supradude...dude! You should have just pulled the motor and then taken it apart. It's so much easier outside of the car. Just unplug the harness from the ECU, undo your fuel lines, oil cooler/tranny lines, grounds and motor/tranny mounts and it'll all come out in one beautiful piece. It saves the knuckles too for the most part. ;)

Oh did you ever find out what trim your turbo is?

Good to see it is going to get restored, at least from an engine point of view. Are you going to use the Toyota engine overhaul gasket set? It is pricey, and has a headgasket in it. But it also has everything you need.

The FIPG only goes on certain spots, and the oil pan.

At least the arps were torqued.

Looks like you a doing a great job of rebuilding unlike the other shortcutter.

Are you going metal hg or another composite.

yeah the arps were annoyingly hard without air tools.

that is the one that i purchased. Third down from the top

Looks like progress. Hey I noticed the pic of your 02 sensor where you said "Mhmm" does that mean you need a new one?

Well it was white from all the coolant that vaporized out of my exhaust, it could be a little "sluggish" now.
i will be keeping a close eye on it when its back in to make sure.

Na, but same thing applies as one of the previous questions.
Follow the link.

I didn't want to use a metal headgasket, i wanna say that i would feel safer with the composite.

From one lurking newb to another. I have done a lot of reading myself on SM. If you do not prep or lap the block you should not use a MHG. The composite HG is much more forgiving to imperfect surfaces and will hold up to high HP as well. Hopefully one of the senior members will chime in with their opinion.

yup. but i am lappin:icon_bigg for the hell of it

i found out this:
quote.
I would say the compressor is a garrett 60-1 and the turbine is a garrett stage 3. As well as the CHRA. To be honest, those wheels are a bit too much for how small the housings are. The only good thing about it is that they didn't leave the stock turbine in - which is a gauranteed problem with that compressor.

I'd run it until it blows up.

I have a Fel-pro headgasket unused in my garage. Good choice. It looks disturbingly (in a good way) like the Toyota gasket. I wouldn't be suprised if Fel-pro supplies Toyota of North America with them.

hahaha omg man, that is soo dirty. Did dude go mudding in that thing?
at least i can fry an egg on my turbo and feel safe eating it.

i feel that it is pointless just to rebuild it. I feel i must care for and love the motor like a son. haha
but in the end, that little extra love can go along way into preventing future breakdowns of my baby.

know what im saying?
but yes.
i still wait patiently for all the parts:runaway::eek3dance

Well you obviously do not have a stock CT 26. A Toyota hg is just fine in a stock application. There's plenty of people here using one with the boost turned up a little and no issues.
