mk1 rearend? thats a solid axle......nice. should have gone ford 9 though

celica and MKI supra are the same, they stretched the front of the car to fit the inline six and also strengthened key components (like the rearend)

it's a bolt in affair...

Dropping a 1J into one of those is a bolt in deal...Really? Or using the MKI rear end is? How hard are those cars to find FS in decent shape. I've been itching to build a true race car, and that would be a perfect starting point, so light.

though it shouldn't be too hard considing the engine mounts probably aren't too far off the pre-89 mounts...

Man I'd really like to know, since you can put a solid axle in the rear pretty easily, it'd make a perfect drag car.

im just sayin...a ford 9in in a turbo supra would be sweet. ive only seen it once....but the guy also had a built small block in there. it was a low 11sec 88 supra, without any kind of tune.

I'm not convinced of that. There was a 7MGTE Mk1 in PA that put out plenty of power but it's main downfall was wheel hop that seemed to have no cure. That car has since been totaled so I don't think a solution was ever found.

solid axle, if done properly, would never experience wheel hop issues that irs have

I've been doing some looking around and found a 73 Celica w/ a narrowed Ford 9" out back, so that's doable. I'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable about wheel-hop to chime in, but I don't think w/ a solid axle, a properly setup suspension, and GRIP it wouldn't be a problem.

no siiirrr it wouldnt. solid axle is the way to go as far as drag race setup. ford 9s are cheap, durable, and easy to find. although the supra rearends are pretty badass for an irs setup

wrong, wheel hop isn't an issue on our cars in all the time I've seen em drag and been driving one.

IRS has less unsprung weight, meaning it's easier for the suspension to control. Wheel hop is caused by the loading of the suspenion and having it spring back. On a leaf spring car it's a huge issue as the axle will load up and twist the spring.

a good 4 link will get rid of a lot of it, but it's not perfect.

Celica and MKI supras had solid axles stock, the MKI axle was beefed up because of the larger motor. After looking at the photos I have of MKI's, they don't appear to have a leaf spring setup.

I'd have to see what the design is, but my point was that IRS generally DON'T have wheel hop issues as the real cause if the pinion climbing it's way up the ring gear, while on an IRS it doesn't have this force.
