70 mph shaking

Below 60mph the car seems to vibrate ever so slightly (almost not noticeable) But once above 70mph or higher the vibration gets progressivly worse. This is all coming from the front end of the car I believe.

What could be causing this? I know its not a bent/unbalanced rim since I have ran 3 different sets of rims in the time of this problem and the current set being brand new. Most common worn out parts on the MK3 are lower ball joints which should probly be replaced anyways, but also what about control arm bushings? If someone with some exp. on this could chime in and help trouble shoot this problem I would greatly appriciate it. :)

Thanks guys,
Chris

That would could deff be a problem, just found it strange that 3 different set of rims all did the same thing. Makes me believe there is something else going on. This is one of the things on my list to double check.

from wat i can tell you sounds like a ball joint or tie rod...jack up one front wheel at a time manually shake it from side to side(in and out) think of it as 3 and 9 o'clock position then try 6 and 12 position do the same there should be little movement when you do so and that should tell you if a ball joint or tie rod...sorry i forgot which position was for ball joint and which was for tie rod but it did solve my shaking problem.!

Im thinking the 6 and 12 would be for ball joint and 3 and 9 of tie rod.
How much movement should there be in each of those postions? just a little or none at all?

ok could nt sleep i have tsrm out it says...LOWER BALL JOINT
jack up front of vechile, make sure wheels pointed straight ahead and depress the brake pedal, jack up lower suspension arm untill about half load on front coil spring, move the lower suspension arm up and down make sure ball joint has no excesive play...maximum lower ball joint vertical play 0.3 mm(0.012in.)
2.UPPER BALL JOINT
move upper suspension arm up and down and check ball joint has no excessive play maximum upper ball joint vertical play 0(zero)....im serious thats what tsrm says
Nothing on tie rods just shows you how to remove lol

I would say unbalanced wheel/tires. Had the same problema got all 4 balanced and was perfect. Also could check the U-joints. Wheel nuts tight, just a thought.

Doubt it's the tires as he's had the same thing happen with 3 different sets. Definately suspension related, just gotta start wiggling (also retorque subframes while you're there!)

Tommorow when I flush diff fluid going to inspect tie rods, ball joints, sub frame bushings, brakes and so on. Check for proper torque on them also. Going to figure this one out asap without assuming and replacing random parts.

another side thought, could this be the drift shaft causing this? The stock 2-piece was taken apart then put back together. Didnt see any timing marks on it but I placed it to where it appeared to be previously by wear/rub marks. Another possibilty..

How about proper wheel lug tourque?
Oddly enough,I experinced that.
If you check, make sure you tourque them down with a tourque wrench, not a air tool!

Torque wrench all the way, no air impact here.

Did an inspection today with the car in the air, everything seemed to be normal. No play at all in the tie rod ends maybee the tinyest amount in ball joints. Going to hit up a tire shop and get all 4 wheels rechecked for balance to eliminate that factor atleast.
