So my friend is goin to europe for a couple months and he has a Turbonetics .56 trim T3/T4. Dont remember what he said the AR is... Anyways the turbo has never been installed, but it has some minor shaft play :dunno: . My buddy said I could give him $400 any time within the next year for the Turbo and a FMIC, which is in new condition. so its basically a gift from him and I can pay him whenever. I know this turbo is kinda small for a 1JZ, but he said the turbo IS good to 450HP. Is this is a good deal? Is it worth getting everything else ( manifold, oil lines, etc.) to put this turbo on my JZ. By the way right now I have stock twins. whats your input?

i'd do it and see what happens. What power levels you wanna go to? Get a manifold that can be used with the popular big turbo upgrades just in case this one doesn't work out too well power wise for you.
okay. It seems Like I could reuse most of the stuff I would get on another turbo if this one is not what I want. How do I get rid of the shaft play? buy a rebuild kit?
It seems like its not bad at all...it BARELY moves. but I'm not sure how much is okay. As for power I'd like to roll around at about 400whp, than at the track boost it a lil more. My friend is all about drifting and he thinks the smaller size turbo would spool faster and be good for drifting (immediate power). Anyways it looks like there are some bigger turbos that could work with the same manifold. its a jumpstart to more power and I dont have to worry bout payin yet so I think ima do it.

damn sounds like a good deal. should have nice response and its surely gonna put out more power than the twins and handle it too.

Got an SAFC II and a Walbro 255. I'm going to put 550s in before I get it tuned with the turbo. And I would really like to get some 2JZ/upgrade cams to go with the tune:evil2:.
i had a 57trim (i think thats what it was) t3/t4 turbonetics, huge front mount 3" i/c pipes (too big in my opinion), safcII, aem wideband o2, stock injectors, stock mkiii fuel pump, and that was it and i made 338rwhp at 15psi. it was still running a little rich too so you'll def. need safc.
yes you are getting a good deal. i wouldnt worry too much about shaft play being you said that its barely there. i think turbonetics has issues with their rear oil seals leaking though. i know mine was leaking pretty bad and quite a few people too from my research.
the turbo spooled EXTREMELY quick though. the only thing i didnt enjoy was how the power dropped after 5500-6000rpm. after the cams i loved it!

Personally, I wouldn't bother with that turbo. It's old tech, and it's meant for smaller displacement motors. It's not going to make much more power over stock twins. For the effort it's going to take to install it, I would spend a bit more money, and install a GT35R or something.
As for shaft play, a little side to side movement is normal for a journal bearing turbo, as there's no oil in the bearings. In and out play should be zero though.

i agree with annoyingrob, your most likely going to want more power from your car. i would go with a bigger turbo..
hmmm. I'm debating... it's just the twins feel so Damn Slow! I like the deal because I don't have to worry about paying my buddy for a year! And my buddy wouldn't even care how much money I gave him at a time, this turbo was just laying dormant. and this could get me started on a faster sup. Str8 6 said that he did like it after cams, and he didn't even have a walbro or 550s. BIG QUESTION: Can I use the T3/T4 manifold/oil lines etc. for another bigger, more HP turbo down the road if I need more power? Basically will I have to sell this shit I buy If I want a bigger turbo or can I reuse it? as long as I could just swap turbos to a bigger one down the road I think Ima do it. $400 bucks for a new turbo/IC is tempting.
it would be a T3 manifold, so you would be limited to a GT35 as about the biggest, but that's still 500whp.
oil lines should be transferable though.

MDC ran 550whp through a hx35 on a 7m, a 1jz has the capability of doing the same or better.
The great things about holset turbos, they are inexpensive. I payed $40 for my turbo, and they show up on ebay routinely for under $400.
