Update:

Car has been running great (engine wise anyways). Had a small issue about a week ago coming up the highway. Smeeled a slight burning rubber smell, then BANG! Pulled over, and shockingly didn't see anything wrong. I just chalked it up to running over something. So anyways a few days later, I go to start my car to go to work in the morning, and it fires up, idles for 30 seconds and dies. Wouldn't restart at all.

After I got home from work I started looking and finally pulled the upper timing cover off.....

Further inspection revealed the initial source of the bang:
sm_photo_missing.jpg

Didn't realize it at the time it split, but the entire outer ring of the dampener is MIA. Having the damper grenade caused a slow progression to the timing belt shredding.

Somehow, when the dampener split, it caused the bolt on the T-belt tensioner pulley bracket to loosen up and back out over those next few days. Once it got to the last couple threads, it dislodged the belt and jumped teeth, and shredded the belt into afine fluff type material. :D I'm still wonderinng how that bolt came out - it was in there with red loctite...

Anyways, Picked up a new dampner, tensioner bolt, and lower timing cover from te junk yard; and a new tensioner and belt kit from the parts store.

Didn't get the whole job done today, ran out of daylight and the bugs were eating me alive. I did get it put together enough to be able to fire it up. Started right up with tho issues. So that was good.

Anways, heres some pics...

Oh not good at all after getting it running, good luck man

Thanks! Not as bad as I may have made it out to be. I'm just glad Toyota decided not to make a
"crash motor." I'm just waiting on the temps to go down a bit before I go outside and finish it up. All I have to do yet is put the serp. tensioner on and the belt and fan. After that she'll be up and going again.

Why, Oh, Why are these cars so addicting? :D

By luck I clicked on this build over the rest, and have noticed the exact same thing after suspecting my pulley to be bad. I also have a NA-T 2J and it used to squeak, I have been meaning to replace it, and noticed it stopped squeaking but I smell burning rubber, JUST noticed a tear in the belt, and timing was popping which I thought I fixed. Did you change the pulley with the engine in since the pulley was already removed? lol. I hear they can be a real PITA to change, I'm afraid to put a used on in, if I could ever find one. Thinking of going ATI, anyways I just wanted to thank you because I have a VVTi engine that is not a non-interference engine like yours. Just when I thought I was ready for a final tune...

Well, as this is a build thread, I guess I should technically update it when I do something to the car, right? LOL

Finally got around to replacing the suspension bushings that were bad; that includes all of them. :D

I was only able to get the front end done over the weekend, but with the 3 day weekend coming up, I'm planning on tackling the rear.

I'll post the pics below the ramblings...

Replaced both front struts, and installed the upper and lower poly control arm bushings. Also purchased brand new camber bolts (all of them) from Toyota - The guys at the parts counter are awesome. I told them I wasn't sure how many I may or may not need, so he ordered all of them in. I did have to purchase them, but was told to bring back what isn't needed for a refund :D

Only had to cut 1 bolt for the drivers LCA - the rear most one. 6" razor wheel on a 4" grinder works amazingly well, and quickly too. Due to not having a press, torch, air compressor anymore, I was forced to use my electric impact, a ball joint/U joint press, and a good 'ol fashion hammer and chisel. I think a hack saw got in the fun at some point too.

As a side note, when I bought the car, it had the ABS light on. Not being a fan of ABS, I really didn't care about it enough to look into it. Well, I found out why. Turns out the passenger spindle/hub assembly was replaced at some point with a non-ABS piece. On another really cool side note, I've been saving a pair of front rotors I pulled off a parts car I had a few years back; the rotors were brand spankin' new. So while doing all this to the car, I figured why not throw them on while it's apart.
I wasn't really thinking about it, but I looked at the side edge of the rotor, and noticed it was labeled Brembo.... :biglaugh: I know it's not a huge deal, but now I can say "yeah, it's got Brembo's" LOL

Anyways onto the pics for those that are interested in seeing what a 26 year old dirty, oily undercarriage looks like:

lookin good!

Thanks! I'm still along way off of were I want it to be, but as it's said "all good things take time" :D Plan of action is to get the suspension completely sorted and aligned, then get a coat of paint on it. Thing looks like a jalopy in it's current form.

Yup, not a single picture works.

Of course, it's been an entire year since Veedubin posted in here, so I don't even know if he still HAS a Supra.

I love the feeling when you go from having the block exposed to having the head installed and torqued down. Now you just hope everything is right lol.

it is running that was a month ago it was very nerve racking because getting the head on straight over the studs alone was not easy i was standing in the engine bay
