4.30 why is it good ???

Okay, since i'm N/A, i've got the 4.30:1 diff, but....Open or LSD is the question. I've checked the code once, and it says its LSD but i dont have TEMS - although i do have headlight washers. Nothing on the original sale reciept about extra's, unless it's on a piece of paper thats been lost somewhere.

I have had the car sideways in the wet twice on the same morning though...

Any markings on the diff itself to make sure?

I came into this post late. If it has not been said then I will say it. Gearing multiplies torque. So the larger the gear ratio, the more the torque coming from the engine is multiplied. So a 4.30 multiplies torque more. However, gearing also multiplies speed. So your engine rpms are with a 4.30 than a 3.73 at the same car speed. So you do get worth fuel economy and a lower possible top speed. Another thing to think about is that given the nature of gearing, inertia is also multiplied. It is multiplied exponentially, not linearly. At least, in an automotive application. So to say a higher never gives you better acceleration is not always true, it is simply mostly true.

the LSD diff was an option. i've seen many cars w/o the sport package but w/a LSD.

So I'm curious, is it easier for a 4.30 to keep traction than the 3.73. Obviously the 4.30 allows the engine to spin up quicker through the gear but 4.3 turns of the DS vs 3.73 turns of the DS means the motor turning higher rpms wont be trying to spin the wheels so much. Is this correct? It seems that some guys (at about the same power level as me) with a 3.73 talk about how bad they spin shifting into second where I get a chirp and very few traction problems.

I come from a land down under
It's a trade off the 4.30's multiply more so can break traction easier but then the 3.73's will load up the turbo more so you make more boost earlier......

4.30's are a lot peppier off boost and in the transition so feel quicker!

i've never driven a supra other than my own, so i have nothing to compare to. however, my car was a sport package N/A, and i kept the 4.3 in it. it is definatly peppy off of boost, and with the stock sawblades and 225/50/r16 tires, i'd break them loose at about 3000-3400rpm with only 289rwhp.

that got old pretty fast. now my falken's have yet to be broken loose... heh. for now. (275/40 rear)

Whatever you do don't let Eric rebuild your diff Derek. :)

Haha why not?

Yea I run 245s in the rear and have about 275 ft-lbs and the tires will make a little sqeal running through first and only a chirp shifting to second with my 4.30 LSD. I'm thinking that the 3.73 tries to turn the tires more quickly after the shift than a 4.30 due to the smaller amount of times the DS needs to turn to make the wheels turn. Does this make any sense?

when i have about 50%(possible less)tread left on my rear's ..

if i stomp on it from a dead stop with ou break boosting, my car builds 10psi by 3k, and by 3.3-4k starts wheel hop or scooting sideways.. she shift's and i lost traction at the begging on second,

i have 3.93's and i am probaly around the 300rwhp mark..

if i break boost im sideways of the line, and hook up some where in second..

totally depends on your power level.

i got rid of my 4.30 years ago because i was tired of lighting up the tires @ 80MPH rolling into boost. sure it's cool and all, but really no fun and rather scary....

didn't think so... even w/ the lack of mods i have... i can't grab traction till the top of 3rd on pavement thats even the slightest bit wet, and my tires are supposed to be good in the rain :-/

I was also under the impression that i had the 3.90 rear, but also under the mpression that was the widest (if that's the correct term) rear end of the mk3's, then when someone brought up the 3.73, i was a bit confused, either way, i have no plans of changing it... i love the way it pulls, toyota did a wonderful job of setting up the gears IMO

lol, knew my terminology was off :nono: i've got a lot to learn yet... but don't you worry, hopefully i'll actually learn something at the school i'll be attending... (not uti for the record, i despise that place) unlike highschool

school i'm attending is a very small automotive school (about 200 students, and it's not part of a chain of schools), that from what i can tell has a very thorough curriculum, and wonderful teachers, i hope to learn a lot there this year :icon_bigg
