Hey guys i just noticed last night my 2nd gear started grinding when ever i tried shifting into it. do u guys know why this would happen all of a sudden? it doesn't happen all the time, but it was happening alot yesterday. my tranny has 70k on it BTW i checked pedal freeplay and adjusted it yesterday. could it be that i am low on tranny fluid? (just flushed it out a couple of months ago)

If you had a clutch release problem, you would have a problem in all gears, and it would be difficult to get into 1st.

Do you have a problem hitting first from a stop?

That being said, 1-2 is the hardest shift, as it has the biggest speed gap. You could need a fluid change, but like the trans is getting worn.

haha the problem went away for a while and then i was busy sorting out my daily and i forgot i posted this lol, i used mobile one. well heres the deal. when i did my clutch swap i put in fresh fluid and then after i started the motor i found out something was unbalanced so i was like f*ck. so i drained all the fliud into clean containers and then fixed the clutch problem and just reused the fluid. now my 2nd gear still sometimes grinds. could i need another tranny flush? it has 72k miles on it now and its only in 2nd gear and only sometimes. i think it happens when i shift too fast but it only happens sometimes.

You shift to fast? So in other words, you try to jam in into gear before the speeds are matched up because the clutch was not disengaged(pedal in).

i don't know about you guys, but both my trannys shift fine in every gear no matter how i shift it (slow or fast). just make sure you stomp the clutch before you even move the shifter. maybe bleed it. i use plan old valvoline oil too. r154. does it only do it when its cold?

Mobil 1 contains friction modifiers that is meant for LSD differentials. Syncromesh is way too thin for the R154....I would use Red Line MT90 or MTL. Pennzoil Synthetic 75W-90 GL4, Pennzoil Gearplus 80W-90 GL4, Ford 75W-90 Synthetic Gear oil or Amsoil MTG 75W-90 are all good to use as well.

Mine was difficult going into 2nd on cold mornings. Replaced the fluid with Redline MT90 and haven't had the problem since.

Same oils for a W58...I use Red Line MT-90 in the W55 tranny on my Toyota truck ;)
Next change I'm going with MTL...a bit thinner and the tranny doesn't have near the torque to handle from the R22 motor.

seeing your sig, im guessing you are na-t, what kind of power are you pushing on your w58, and for how long.
being that 1>2 is the hardest shift on the tranny, it would be the first to go.

i'm running about 300 rwhp, its been a lil over a year since i been turbo and maybe 4-5 months since i been running at 13psi. that could be it. i think what i will do is change out the fluid and see first. if not theres a junkyard with a w58 i can prolly get for cheap

well w58's pop usually around 350, but if you have been really beating on it, 300 would be plenty.

i very rarely beat on my car unless its on the track which isn't very often. i'm going to pickup the spare w58 anyway since it seems like a good idea since its cheap. but i will first try mt-90 in my car. where do you guys get that stuff anyway?

its a carfasion bomex replica, but don't bother trying to get one from carfasion. they are a pain in the ass company and you'll regret your purchase.
