Most people (few people) that have done this swap 2jzgte & V160 trans into
A70 mk3 Supra went with an aftermarket speed gauge/sensor. And other guys
just drive their cars without any speedometer.
The rear differential has nothing to do with the speed sensor....and that's for
all 4 supra generation cars! The speed sensor is located on the transmission
either W58 ,R154, A340 (auto). It's a machanical sensor that sends motion to
a mechanical speedometer cable which goes behind the MA70s dashboard.
Then there is located the REAL Speed sensor which converts the mechanical motion
of the speedometer cable into an electromagnetic pulse. And then this signal is
(pink cable) distributed to the MA70 computerised systems like TEMS ecu, ABS ecu,
ECT ecu, Cruise control ecu, Super monitor/Trip computer ecu, and last at the TCCS
ECU!

SupraClaou, there is only one hole in your explanation.

The rear differential may not contain the speed sensor, however, the gearing inside of it absolutely changes how fast the output shaft on the transmission is spinning, and therefore, changes the value on the speedometer.

If you want your speedometer to read correctly, you will need to do at least one of the following:
- change the rear differential
- change the speed sensor in the transmission
- use an adapter box on the speedo cable

Yes you are right :naughty:
Ofcaurse the rear diff plays a good role on the speedometer....
But almost everybody altered the speedometer reading simply by
just installing bigger wheels :biglaugh:

v160/v161 is useless in our cars due to the gearing (not to mention the headache of making it fit). MKIVs with the v160 use a 3.13 gear, the 161 has a 3.23 gear IIRC. The lowest we have (stock) is a 3.73. At one point we had 3.55s, but they are out of production.

Stick with the r154, it will save a lot (and hold a bit of power)

well it would be fine to use a v-160 as long as you use a mk4 diff too. All the more power to you if you can do that.
Does anyone know how the mk4 diff compares to the mk3 diff as far as strength is concerned?

I agree with you. R154 will save a lot and will hold quite big power (<700whp)
But I've talked with 2 guys who did the conversion and even with the 3.7 rear which is the tallest oem gear IT IS NOT so bad at all. Fisrt gear will be
an issue with big power. Though we can play with bigger wheels and higher
rev limits :biglaugh:
Example with a rear tire of 285-35/18 and 8200 rpm rev limiter we still can
reach about 60km/h top speed in 1st gear. Not bad indeed :biglaugh:

Now there is the solution of the 3.5 rear which is not available anymore,
but I heard there is a 'back door' to get this gear. From this RWD cars:
LX81 Toyota Cresta and Toyota 4 Runner 22R that both had the 3.55 rear !

Both rears are strong. Very strong!
8 inch rears on both cars (JZA80 & MA70),though the mk4 93.5-95 modells
had an 8.5 inch rear but discontinued since 95 and till the end of the mk4
production they went with an 8".
Duane had more than 30 passes on a dragstrip or something before the
stock MA70 rear 'give up'. And we all know Duane's big horsepower mk3:icon_bigg

Its funny how much that number changes. I've heard people say he made over 200 passes on it too:biglaugh:

200 passes it is......But not all of them on his peak power!
But 25-30 passes of them were on full power, which means = 850 whp!
850 whp on the stock rear differential. Not bad :naughty:
