Is it stupid to go with oem head gasket tourqued to 75 lbs?

I don't want to pay to pull the engine to deck the block.

Am I getting hosed? This also includes plugs and a bunch of new hoses and gaskets etc...

If you use ARP head studs and check the block's deck surface to see that it isn't warped. Im guessing your going to get the head machined as well because that is a must.

there's no way you can diy? $2200 is a little much imo

plugs, hoses, gaskets = not more than $300-$400
head gasket stock is around $100
arp studs $125

all aproximate prices
puts you around $600
the rest is you paying for labour

I know two local mk3 mechanics that have told me they would do a MHG job for around $800 parts and labor (that's with a proper machine job). If you already blew the headgasket, you'll be paying more esp. warping or damage has been done.

DUDE! dont just go to any mechanic. go to aaron! from driftmotion. IMO hands down best and most honest businessman ive ever met! he'll tell you exactly what you need and save you some money..plus he'll do it right. just explain to him your goals for the car and he'll put you in the right path. give him a call 9097537385

If you warped your block there is something wrong. you shouldn't have to pull your whole engine out, I just did a headgasket replacement on my cressida in my car it costed me about $400 for parts and I did everything myself. I bought an ebay gasket set and ARP head studs had my head cleaned and checked for warpage and it was within spec so I put everything back together and its running fine. If you have the mechanical ability you should do the work yourself it's really not that hard. If you have a TSRM it should be even easier.

I should probably have mentioned this includes resurfacing the head, new valve seals, a lot of cooling hoses, plugs fluids, and a 12 month warrentee.
I paged back through the records of the car, and found that the head was rebuilt at 80,000 miles for $2100. So, I don't feel too bad now...

thats still a lot find someone around you to help you out itll be cheaper...just cause it has a warranty doesnt mean the builder knows what hes doing you could probably take it to driftmotion and probably be the same price and you know there going to do it right the 1st....either way thats way to much money....

if you go that way im only spending like a grand more than you on my build and im doing suspension, 57trim, npr pistons, gasket, titan mhg, ect.....so id recommend find someone local..get on the socal forum and post a thread there see if someones near you to help you out...

Imo that really is not that much if you are not doing it your self.

Standard shops rates are around 100$/hr and a head job is around 10-12 hrs. Then you have to factor in the head work and materials. sounds about right for someone who is not doing it them selfs.

If you were doing it yourself it would cost under 700 or even paid one of the many socal folks you could do it for under 1k-1500k.

Have you been on www.socalsupras.com ???

Lol, I misread what you were trying to ask at first. That does seem a little steep, but it really depends on what he's replacing. Mine has cost me so far well over $1800 and im doing it myself. But that is because i have bought a bunch of tools and am replacing everything possible to rid further problems. If you have someone else do it, make sure to get recommendations from other supra owners. A lot of mechanics are all talk, they will tell you what you want to hear. Go with someone who has worked on supra's before, good luck.

Dont cheap out on the BHG job, or you will be doing it again in a year. At the very least you want to machine the head. Normally you want to go through the cooling system and replace the waterpump, timing belt and coolant hose while you are in there. Factor in the shop rate of $60-100 per hour plus the parts and that price is about right. With out seeing the actual quote its hard to judge what is being repaired and replaced.

So the mechanic calls and tells me that he poured coolant into the top of all of the pistons and that # 2 and #5 all leaked out within a half an hour so I neede to rebuild the whole engine for $5K. He stated that I would burn a ton of oil and that he wouldn't warrantee his work if I didn't do it.
I reminded him that he told me I had 150 psi in everthing except #2 after his leakdown test and told him to just finish with the BHG. I'm so f-ing sick of rip off mechanics I could just puke...

There is a VERY easy solution to your last statement. DO IT YOURSELF. Then you have nobody to blame but yourself if anything goes wrong.

I dont take my car into a mechanic for ANYTHING except A/C capture. I dont even feel easy about letting a tire shop handle my wheels and tires, let alone anybody touching anything in the engine bay.

Once you invest in the tools and spend the time learning some of this stuff, the work is not hard. It takes an initial investment, but you could easily buy a set of decent tools and all the parts for well under what a shop would charge you. ;)
