The newer F-bodies aren't even that bad on the road course either, I've seen a lot better performance out of them than MKIIIs, that's for sure... And the 03/04 Cobras are simply beasts. Are they bigger and heavier than miatas or S2000s? Yes, but that doesn't mean they automatically suck at handling.

I don't think these new muscle cars will handle badly at all, that's what everyone already thinks about them and it's more than likely the manufacturers are trying to defeat that generalized belief.

I will say that a lot of the autox courses around here are tailored around the Miata size cars. 03/04 Cobra's from factory are beasts and with minor bolt ons will put you back in the seat as well as carve with the best.

Because they have IRS... Ford seriously fucked up with the GT500 with staying solid rear...

The 3rd and 4th gen f-bodies CAN handle pretty damn well. 3rd gens are lighter than our cars, and can dial in huge amounts of camber up front. 4th gens have a suspension setup in front just like ours (double A-arm).

Keep in mind I like cars that can do EVERYTHING well. Vettes, Supras, GTRs, ect can do most everything really well. Straight line is great, but a bad handling car is cumbersome at best, and absolutely dangerous at worst.

a nutthugging idiot? jesus dude i think i found your soft spot. try not to be an oversensitive prick the next time YOU post. theres no need for slanderous personal attacks here. and i never compared ANYTHING to a mkiii supra hahaha YES they ARE boats!! i do not disagree!

and you can make any muscle car handle when you replace the ENTIRE rear suspension setup.. let a racing team go at almost any car and theyll dump thousands into a new suspension. im talking about 100% stock cars here. and i never dissed 03/04 cobras either, in fact i applauded their awesomeness. im talking about the latest breed of american muscle cars. this is all speculation because no one here has even driven one, but based on years of observation, i hardly see how saying the cars wont handle makes me ignorant.

in other words... the turns are too sharp?

Zambini,

I just wouldn't make the generalization that American muscle cars will never handle. Hell the new CTS-V even handles. Z06 awesome, ZR1 is the best out there, Termis are amazing, Ford GT holds its own, as well as the S7. Mustangs handle amazing with just a few mods...springs, struts, etc. Mine does.

The Shelby GT/SC was the most nimble car I have rode in. It is a 100% stock showroom car, dynoed at 598RWHP STOCK, all the Shelby susp. goodies, big brake kit, all the usual supporting stuff, and all this with 20x9.5 rims I think. It would stop on a dime and was one of the smoothest cars I have felt through the turns, it seemed like it wasn't even trying.

I personally cant wait for this "retro" trend to end. It was cool at first, but its starting to bug me. Its like you can almost look in a classic car callender and guess what the new model is going to look like. Pontiac, i think took a step in a better direction(if they make the trans am) using the 77/78 trans am theme. But then Its only a matter of time before we start seeing rehashed IROCs! And as far as american cars handling, if you ever look through car magazine articles from the 80s and forward, Vette/F bod/Mustangs are consistently competitive in handling with all other cars. I remember reading one from 84 i believe where the z28 and 944 were tied for the best handling cars sold in america...I think its just cars like the miata that play into this sterotype

I can vouch for the way Ryan's mustang handles. It looks good, sounds good and handles a curve pretty good too. I'm not a mustang fan, but I like Ryan's car.

Hey Isphius, I graduated in 1988 and Irocks were da bomb...........:biglaugh:

I graduated in 2005 haha... and when i was young TPI irocs were still awesome but never escaped that italian stereotype... But when i was 5 or 6 My uncle dated a girl who owned a pizza hut and she had a brand new 350 iroc and him and my dad always used to argue over it being faster than my dads 81 z28 or not. They never got to race though! But i remember wanting one of those camaros since i rode in the iroc. I finally got one, 84 z28 5 speed and traded it away for my 91 trans am...which i still regret!

Must have some crazy stuff done to it to keep up with a Stage III or SC.

If they came back with the last gen F-Bodies...I would buy one, as would many other people.

Jay, yea that was a fun trip. I am actually replacing my u-joints, rear trans seal, front driver ball joint, and a few other odds and ends to get ready for some future meets. But you also saw what happens to the Stang when I don't use my awesome throttle control around the hairpins haha. And the ol bhamsupra tried to follow suit hehe.

Told you guys, you can't compare old cars to new ones..

I could get a go kart from my cousin for $20, and drop in a hayabusa engine I got from my sister's coach's uncle charlie's 3rd wife's brother in law for $35.75, and burn Enzos all day...

Its a pointless argument.

I can vouch for Ryan's car too, I am just glad he changed out his personalized tag so I can have new material to read when I race him (twisties or straights) (dig or 85 roll). I benchmark my car against his and have seen his margins shrink month over month so my car is improving as is my driving. Both still need a lot of work.
Could it be that it's not Ryan's Mustang, but his super human abilities at the wheel. Is he some sort of pseudo speed-racer or is he the second coming of Parnelli Jones?
I can tell you this, if he doesn't get some mods bolted on to his "cool lil pony" over the next 4 months, he'll get his ass handed to him by some pure 7M POWER in the form of a Red '91 MK3.

But hey.... maybe that will humble him up on these forums a bit.

I like the direction they took with the body styling. BUT
they screwed up the wheel base very badly the same reason i dont like the 93+ camero/firebird/ta they put the wheels to far away from the end of the car damaging cornering.

If you look closely at the ends of the mustang then look at the wheelbase the back wheels are almost in the middle of the car and the body hangs very far over, the tail

I would like to suggest a better looking car design for american muscle the concept corvette used in transformers 2

notice on the vette how the wheels are close to the corners evenly:naughty:

That new vette concept looks like an LFA and vette had a bastard son...

Putting the wheels at the extreme corners can make the car too long, RUINING handling. It's why they do it on small cars and not so much on larger cars.

domestic front overhangs are really long because of crash test safety regulations. i am not full of shit. the reason the vette has such a low overhang is because design and handling are pushed so hard by the corvette team itself inside general motors.
