Picked up this '87 turbo, from a co-worker for $1500. 9/10 body and interior. about 80k on a JDM engine, lots of newer parts, and a improperly installed MHG I'm re-doing right now.

I was browsing e-bay and picked up this generic turbo kit which spur-of-the-moment, I thought was a steal ($560) and would be a great start, now I'm wondering if I should use everything in it, however I think even tho they are generic components, they will still perform better than stock, and be a good bang for the buck to start with, untill I can afford to upgrade them.

I'm planning on getting the maft-pro, with the wideband and boost control kit to run everything. I'm friends with a exhaust shop that can build me a good 3" exhaust for it, and a connection at a toyota dealership to get some lexus 550 injectors.

engine has 155-160 compression, ran perfect, just was leaking exhaust into the coolant.

So I'd like some informed opinions on this turbo kit, if is all worth using, or if its totally useless and will cause nothing but problems (and why). I know theres a lot of fab work to do, which I'm fine with, I'm not new to building up cars, this is my first turbo build however, so I'm not familiar with turbo component specifics. my goal is just to build up a fun weekend car, and replace / upgrade components over time, but I'd like to start with what I have.

I don't see why this generic stuff won't work, and build decient boost. I'm only planning on running about 15psi to start, and see how it goes (I know the turbo is huge, but for the price I'd like to start with all this.)

its a very big turbine A/R. I think its way-too big for streetdriving

aside from lag, and the wastegate dumping obnoxious amounts of unmuffled exhaust, how would it be bad?
I'll have to see how bad the lag will be, but also the turbo will barely be working, and should also lower my intake air temp.

I don't want a turbo this big, but I don't know if its worth $1000 or so to downsize vs deal with it.

I'm also debating spending the $700+ on the full maft pro set-up. my current goals are to make a reliable 400whp, and the added tunability and security of a speed density maft set-up would be ideal, I'm wondering if a lexus AFM would be sufficient? would defenantly be a lot cheaper to get this car up and going, I'm just concerned about lack of tunability, and causing damage.

I was considering this as well,
however I decided to go with maft, since you'll be elminating the AFM, so that's 100ish bucks out right there, but it also eliminates the need for SAFC, wideband guage/set up, and any other tuning and I figured that I'll be spending that much in all the other shit you'll need to tune anyways.
Just food for thought.

1.15AR is huge.

I've looked at dyno sheets with people using a .84 turbo, making around 500whp, and the curve isn't too spikey, and looks like it comes on smooth. I'm only looking to make 400hp, but hey, I already got this turbo, so I'll use it and see what happens.

its the generic wastegate that has me worried. I presume the MAFT boost controller should be able to keep the levels low enough (want to start at 10psi) then dyno tune my set-up to run optimal.

So I know how everything works, however I do not know the difference between a high and low end wastegate. as long as it opens via a good boost controller, should't it be fine?

I know the turbo is big.

can I get some informed information on problems I may run into? suggestions? or is this cheap e-bay package going to work great?

Yeah but the difference between .84 and 1.15 is significant.

Just stating.

I was referring to a .84ar compressor, which is what mine is.

and again, I know its big, however, is lag and a peaky power curve the only concern?

and if so, what can I do to help minimize it? I"m fabbing 2 1/2" hard intercooler pipping + big intercooler, 3" turbo back exhaust, no cats, good muffler, divorced down pipe, with the aftermarket manifold.

suggestions?

what would be a good, but relatively inexpensive wastegate to use, that can dump this much with a 40mm flange? I'm seriously starting to question using the one I have.

Stopped in at my exhaust shop today. they'll build me a 3" turbo back mandrel bent exhaust, with the v-band clamp, a decient magnaflow muffler, and divorced down pipe for $400 installed. $300 if its not mandrel bent.

$50 more and they will do a test pipe section, and flange my stock cat so I can bolt it in for emissions.

any other way to pass? heh. I've always used the fuel drier trick, but I don't wanna run this car lean at all. or turn the boost way down and just lean it out? I just have to drive 2 miles on side roads to the sniffing station.

oh, if anyone in the seattle area needs good, performance exhaust work done for a low price, I highly recommend them. I believe they can even fab turbo manifolds, ect too. just south of auburn off 167. they have done 3 of my cars, and a dozen or so friends, with zero problems and all smiles. http://performanceexhaustonline.com/Home.html
