Getting ready to do a 1j swap, planning on making my own custom intercooler piping. However, would there be anything else that I would need that the clip would come with that a complete engine would not? I know a lot of this will vary by seller, but what have your experiences been?

igniter?
map sensor?
o2 sensor?

Yes, I searched

If you just get an engine set, this usually includes :
engine ( complete with all sensors/ignitor/coils etc)
tranny
harness/ecu
Motor brackets/mounts
Stock downpipe - ( maybe )

Ofcourse make sure you get one from a JZA70 or else the mounts may be different as well as the oil pan.

What you may lose out on is the reservoirs for the hyrdrofan ( if you need it)
Power steering reservoir if your seller does not include that.
Hydrofan seup/radiator etc.
Intercooler and piping ( but most people use aftermarket)

If you are going to use electric fans or 2JZ fans/water pump setup and using your own IC and piping, then just get a motor set.
I' really haven't seen much else that you can use out of a clip itself except for the engine, harness, ic and piping abd and reservoirs and afew nuts and bolts.

However, depending on what clip you get, it can/may come with some after market goodies but that is just chance.

As stated above If you get an engine set there are a couple other things to like throttle cable, power steering line, power steering resivior, depends on the engine set you get aswell, if you get a soarer engine set you need motor mounts, the list keeps going, If you had a link to an engine your looking at then maybe we can help you out alittle more.

The 7m reservior won't work? I have an '88 so I plan on buying the BIC motor mounts anyway, so are the aristo mounts still a problem?

Planning on getting something like this:

hopefully it doesnt have rodknock for 850$

aristo brackets wont work, the round mounts will if you cut the little tab off of it they are exactly the same as the 7m's/jz's

and the 7m resovoir will work

Yeah I just posted that one as an example. Are you talking about the round BIC mounts?

I used the 7m reservoir when I did my 2jz swap jst like Tlo's.
You can use it the same way for the 1jz swap if tou don't get one with the engine.

The NA PS reservoir can be used for the Hydrofan as well. ( Omit this if you are using electric fans or 2jz fans)

You will need the jza70 brackets or get one from BIC. Then you can use the stock 7m round mounts ( rubber ) if you have an 89 + or get square brackets and mounts from BIC for prior to 89 years.

That's what I thought, it's an '88 so I will Pic up the BIC's. Since I need them anyway, does it matter what mounts come on the engine?

Not really. The type f mounts that will work with your car is determined by your subframe, and in this case, you have square ones ( the rubber part) . Just get the BIC ones and they will fit fine. If you end up getting a set with your engine, sell it off and get some money back.

Everything came but the hydrofan stuff in my case. If i were to do it again, I wouldnt get a motorset and I probably wouldn't have gone 1jz. I should have gone 2j from the start, lol.

Cool, thanks for all of the help guys. I'm trying to make a list of everything I should ask if the clip includes before I buy the motor.

SO far I have:

Downpipe
PS reservior
MAP sensor
o2 sensor
igniter

Anything else?

If you're not familiar with JZ swaps, you should get a motorset or clip.

Some people who have done a few can start with much less and put together a running car but that's because they're very familiar with the swap, all the little small things, and were to source parts pretty easy.
