provided your ECUs have grey plugs, then the HAC is internal....meaning you have a bad ECU.
swapping ECUs shouldn't affect your tune....provided you tuned the low throttle map to satisfy Vf....
if you're going to college, you need something cheap and reliable. forgo the desire to have a "nice" or "fast" or "sporty" car for a few yrs- focus on school, then graduate and get a good job and pick up a sporty "fun" car....

also depends on what you have wired in, remember it is possible to backfeed the ECU w/power if you hooked up an external device improperly.
it totally depends on YOUR usage. i've had a variety of short shifters....NONE of them are compatible with my usage of the car (racing). EVERY real short shifter i've used caused missed shifts when drag racing. it's a combination of the design of the trans and its age. i run a SOGI short shifter...
chances are your 4.4 settings aren't playing well with 4.8.....and then the flash back to 4.4 didn't help because the 4.8 settings didn't translate well back to 4.4. hopefully you saved a .bin of your 4.4 settings before upgrading to 4.8...

totally depends on HOW you treat it and HOW the PO treated it....FWIW my W58 had 150k on it when i slapped in the GTE.....tq went up to 330 or so for 20k or so miles, then up to 430 or so for another 2k.....then the trans let go on the freeway.
