i dont think the car would try to die if you unplug the egr vacuum hose. are you sure thats what its supposed to do? i havent had egr for over a year.
definitely a vsv plug. there is two of them. the first is with the group of wires that drops down in the rear hole of the lower intake plenum (i.e. the starter plug, transmission plug,...etc.) this vsv is usually easy to find. the other, is with a knock sensor plug under the first runner like...
backfire is usually from running too rich i believe.
edit: i remember, its probably that coolant temp sensor on top of thethermostat housing. mine was broken once and the car idled high...and backfired.
i did this mod over a year ago, i did not use the inline fuse and i also did not ground the foglight switch on the defroster ground, i ran a seperate ground to the dash frame... didnt think to try a ground from another switch.
