Matt's break it 'til it works thread

Finally finished disassembling the GTE so I can take it in to be machined. I was completely (not)surprised to to find the BHG lurking under the head. Long piece of rust goop I found sticking out of a coolant passage: What I was surprised to find was that the number 4 connecting...

Are those the sensors on the water neck. If so, that is probably your problem.

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

If it's only on start up then your rings just aren't seated yet. Give it more time.

    Saved from the crusher

Thanks for all the comments. Body has almost no rust, literally just one spot that is easy to fix. I'm thinking about keeping the L28 and scrounging up a turbo conversion. Since there was a factory turbo version it shouldn't be that difficult to come up with the parts. I have always wanted a...

    Saved from the crusher

Well I accidentally bought a 280ZX. I went to the junkyard with a friend to help him pull a hatch for his Z31 and we wandered all over looking for one. Turns out a Z31 was the only Japanese sports car they didn't have that day. As we searched I stumbled across an 82 280ZX that was remarkably...

Are RC's high impedence or low impedence? If they're low impedence check the resistor pack for a good connection.

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

I tried replacing the seals with the head still on once. I did two of them and pulled the head off. Way more work than it's worth, IMO.

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

Sounds like the shop messed up your valve stem seals or didn't install them. Replacing them without taking the head off is almost impossible so looks like one way or another it's coming apart.

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

That's just bizarre. Was there any oily residue on the sparkplugs? Usually when you have leaking valve stem seals at least one of the plugs will look wet. Can you post a pic of where you dipstick tube mounts to the block? I'm fairly certain that the 7Ms use the same dipstick length...

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

If you're confident that the rings are good then the head is the only other place where oil could get in there. Did you just drop the head on as is from before the rebuild? Are you still consuming the same amount of oil?

Burning oil and smoking after fresh rebuild!

Pull your spark plugs and examine them. If you're burning oil they will have gray/white ash buildup all over them. If they come out clean then your rings are probably fine and you're leaking like crazy from somewhere.
