Water damage is a nightmare in a modern automobile. As ATL88 asked, what kind of water damage are we talking about? Did this thing sit out in a rainstorm with the windows open, or are we talking about a car that has taken a bath in the Gulf of Mexico?

Inch it up in 1/2 psi increments if you can - safest way - you probably have a lot of room.

I run an 8,000 mile change interval on the hartop with a filter every 4,000 miles. It's less than 1/2 a quart -- I just add 1/2 quart when I change the filter. 190K miles - runs like new.

Ok, that makes sense, since the charger completes the circuit. Might also be really important to point out that the battery shouldn't be in the car and connected while doing this...
