You would have rope in the cylinder so you would never be in this situation, but seriously, if some one asked you to help them get a valve out of their cylinder you would rather pull the head than do this?

Definitely. When we were finished we brought the piston back to TDC to keep it from dropping again.

Similar but not quite. A compression test measures the amount of pressure a cylinder can create. A leakdown tester measures the percentage of air escaping from the cylinder. If you pass a compression test I wouldnt worry about it.

If you do manage to get the valve back up you can do a leakdown test to check if the valve was damaged
