That's kind of surprising to hear. Friend has an 88T and an 04 VR6 6 speed GTI. MKIII would start edging out the Golf around 40, both cars bone stock. We put 2.5" hard pipes, an open 3" down pipe and set the boost to 10PSI and the MKIII yanks the Golf pretty hard now.

Shane's definitely a good guy. He's pretty much the only reason Suprafanatic and I made it home with that 1J car.
