I wonder why some cars crack these and some never do. My 87 has 104K on it and no cracks. It was used as an offroad beater car by some kids for a while before I got it too.
Last time I checked there were no new ones, just reman. I don't imagine toyota does anything that the other reman companies do, they might even be buying them from them.
I understand what you're taking about now IJ... I had to think about it for a bit. The rack gear wears on the tube and then...
Hopefully that old lady decides to get out of the car game. I get angry with old people who decide they would rather injure people than suck it up and take the bus. What a shame, sorry to see it happen, especially since you had it happen with your last one.
I tore the rack apart last night and I found a burr in the spool valve that was causing an excessive gap between the valve switching the fluid transfer from the left to right side of the steering ram. I'm guessing the burr developed from years of the valve sliding back and forth. I took the burr...
I found this guy's page:

...and he fitted a mustang rack by welding on new rack mounts. This looks like a good way to go if the 89-92 rack is no improvement. He used a manual rack, but I'd go with a power rack. Probably the newest...
I was reading this:
http://www.mustang50magazine.com/techarticles/m5lp_1207_power_steering_steered_straight/viewall.html
....While searching for information about why older rack and pinion cars seem to have crappy steering feel and precision compared to new cars. So if Ford was updating the...
If they cared about them enough they would have gone to a computer shop and done this already before they junked it. The first thing computer illiterate people do when their computer with important stuff won't work anymore is go to a repair shop and assume that miracles can be worked to get...
$1700 for a 1JZGTE with no trans is too much. $1300 shipped or less is about right.
Anyway, I'd go with the 2JZ-GE if you have the skill to do a turbo conversion like that. If not the 1JZ is a nice easy swap. If you take care of all needed maintenance before you put it in you won't need to...
No intentions of being a smart ass here, but you have your terminology mixed up a bit. The ring land is the part of the piston between and above the rings. You've got a broken ring, not a broken ring land. Those do break too though, so check your pistons carefully. Detonation usually breaks...
FYI, (if you haven't figured this out on your own yet) the auto trans that comes with most 1JZ engines is a direct drop in. You can use your old trans too using the bellhousing that comes with the new trans. All the A34X series toyota autos use the same trans to bellhousing pattern as far as...
They aren't actually on the quarter panels, they're on the "mud guards" which are plastic. It's just 3M clear paint protection film. You can buy it at most paint shops or on ebay and cut it yourself. To take it off you'll have to use a heat gun and razor blade and very carefully scrape it off...
You'll get tired of the fuel smell after you park, best to just install a canister. I still haven't done it on my car though, and I can't say I've had any problems. I do wonder about it's positive effect on fuel consumption though. It recovers the vapors, and then expels them into the engine to...
It's gone. That same guy lists NSX's, FD's and Supras on autotrader all the time for exactly $4K too. Been doing it for years. I don't know how he's not in jail. Probably a group of guys working the same scam though.
If you have a 7M the fuel cut doesn't correlate with boost pressure, it's based on a certain max airflow value. You can hit that max airflow at different boost pressures in different gears. You're more likely to hit fuel cut in higher gears because they load the engine more and the turbo works...
Hahaha that speaker box. If the kid can't afford proper speakers so he rigs that up like that, imagine what was half assed on the rest of the car.
Skip it. Look for a car with better quality of work. My cousin bought a 300ZX with crap like that rigged up for the stereo... and turns out the...
They probably accidentally dyno'd your car in 3rd gear. They should have used 4th gear.
I know this because I dyno'd my supra in 3rd because of my JDM ecu speed cut kicking in it at ~6K in 4th gear, and it made my torque 500 something. I had to unplug the speed sensor wire from the ECU to...
My engine importer told me it had 35K on it "absolutely, because we buy them as whole cars in Japan at auctions and then we part the cars out and ship the stuff over in containers". So he assured me it had the mileage that he said it had.
Then when I got it, installed it, and ran it.... after...

Part number 73709. Came only on "NATO" models. It was for the child seat tether system. Looking at it now, I'm not sure that's the same as the "LATCH" system. They picture one of them in the diagram, but you need two to...
I did the alignment to factory spec, with caster on the high side of the range. I had it way out last time from some experimenting. Camber was -0.6 degrees, and caster was at 9 degrees, toe was zero. I also centered the tie rods, because the rack was off center by about 10mm, which I didn't...
I have a 1JZ, so it's a 92-95' pump. I wouldn't want my more assist, the steering is over assisted feeling already. I'd love to swap to a PPS rack, but I don't know whats involved with that swap or if it would even fit the 87'.
I guess I'm back to finding a steering damper to try though...
