I'm doing a 5speed swap, I came across these 2 r154 tranny. $550 67,xxx miles, or $280 15x,xxx miles.. which one would you pick? btw both shift fine without shifter

Well for 280 you could buy a rebuild kit for the 15x,xxx and still be a under 550 but then you have to rebuild it, or pay someone to do it. There are alot of presses and stuff required to do it yourself and a shop would probalby charge around $400 for parts and labor to do it. something to think about

680ish for a rebuilt tranny
550 for one thats most likely good but you never know
280 for one that is a gamble, could be good could have shot syncros

Just spend the money and get the lower mileage one.

get the one with higher mileage, and get it rebuilt. Then you would have 1 perfectly fine gearbox

doesn't matter which one you get, just rebuild the thing. it will last you for years to come, unless you abuse it like no other.

I dunno. It's not like 15x,xxx miles is necessarily the factor. It's how hard the mileage was.

Get the cheaper one. Get it rebuilt. Get rid of the crappy cast thrust bushing, and you've got a really strong transmission.

Mine has 300k on it and has never been rebuilt and shifts fine. my only compliant is getting the shifter to feel tighter, but everything I have done doesn't tighten it up none. My 85 Supra with a rebuilt tranny the shifter felt looser then my r154 so I assume that mine is fine and that it is all in my head.

IMO, depends on what you're going to do with it. If you're going to run it with less than 300rwhp, I'd say get the lower mileage one and treat it with a modicum of respect Above that, get the higher milage one and rebuild it.

If you're all about doing it right, get the higher milage one and rebuild it anyway.

Get the high mileage one and run it...if it feels like its going out rebuild it. Its an hour of work to remove. Put a new marlin crawler bushing in it if the shifter feels loose...it will tighten it up.
