So there's still no way to fix that problem? But wouldn't changing out the sending gear and dif even it out?

Sure, if you can find one the right size. This is far more than Mr. Hatter needs to worry about. The simplest solution for him would be dropping in a 160MPH guage from another MKIII and not having to worry about gearing or recalibration. As for the displayed mileage on the new guage, that's remedied easily enough.
