I have a 91 and can source a set of replacement door panels but they are 89- For me the end result should be to have it look stock with the larger speaker grills, as well as the ability to have a larger speaker also :)

It looks like the speaker opening on the 89- would have to be enlarged, but does the larger speaker grill on the 89+ fit flush??

Has anyone done this successsfully? Thanks.

of course the door panels are interchangeable its just the fact that the 6.5" speaker pods would look weird on a 4" speaker door panel, other than that its a direct fit, if you are okay with a mismatched door panel then i guess its fine, the speaker pods wont make a difference with the panels, just the speaker grille is the big thing... since a lot of pre-91 owners here can change to 6.5" pods, then u should be fine...

Thanks modmonster, I guess I should ask will the 6.5 speaker pods work on that door panel, meaning will my 6.5 grill now fit on that door panel?? Hope i'm making my point clear. Thanks.

Larger grill won't fit as the metal part in the door panel is different. You can run the smaller speaker grill that would be on the door panel with the larger speakers (lots of people do)

You should be able to retro fit the metal bracket/grill from your 91 door panel to the new 89. Just drill out the pop rivets and cut accordingly.

Here are a few pics to show you the difference:
