Worn Turbo seals?

1988 Toyota Supra Turbo - Automatic
Completely stock. Changed the plugs and put MSD wires over the summer.

Lately I've been experiencing awkward throttle response. I had a feeling it was the intercooler piping because I had an aftermarket BOV mounted on a hardpipe that may not have been flush with the stock IC pipes. I replaced the aftermarket BOV w/hardpipe with all the original piping and put back the stock bov. I went out and drove, and the throttle response was a little better, but my problem was still the same. When the turbo begins to spool, the car doesnt go. You can hear the turbo spool up and nothing happens acceleration wise. When this occurs, it sounds like the car is downshifting. Im not sure what the problem is.

*Other problems with my car that may conflict with this one*
- When driving at normal speed, the car shifts into 2nd gear at 10-12mph. Isn't this too early? I remember it shifting around 18-20 mph.
- Im running rich
- Burning oil
- o2 sensor may be toast since I've been running rich.

Im currently looking up the o2 sensor, and I am going to replace it. I dont know if these other problems are affecting my throttle response.
Any help would be kindly appreciated..

sounds like a boost leak to me. Even though you replaced the section with the BOV, check to see if you have a leak elsewhere in the intercooler piping.

this would cause your car to run rich since metered air is now escaping and not making it to the engine.

Thanks alot, I'll check for boost leaks, and hopefully be able to locate and solve my problems...

Thanks again, I had this page on my favorites just in case I ever decided to do a boost leak test.. If it doesnt turn out to be boost leak, what else could it be? Im sure it's a boost leak though, because as soon as I begin to spool up, the throttle response is decreased..

If you're hearing the turbo begin to spool up but it feels as if your car isn't going anywhere, it's very likely (as everyone else has said) that you're running pig rich.

What is a probable cause to you running rich? Boost leak! :icon_wink

When you have a very minor boost leak, such as a small tear in the rubber coupler that isn't visible when looking at, but when under boost, opens up just enough to throw your AFR off and have a BIG & sudden drop in power.

When it comes to boost leaks in the past, I think I've dealt with it one too many times than I should've...so I can say that I've 'been there, done that'. ;)

As for your early shifting, it is perfectly normal.
Matter of fact, that is a good sign that it's easily grabbing each gear. :)

It's when, at a light throttle percentage, it takes a bit longer to shift that you want to start getting concerned. :)

And yes, if you've been running rich for a while, your o2 sensor will take a strong hit...strong and long enough to damage it!...Therefore throwing everything out of place.

Burning oil - Is your oil brown/black? If so...Change it! :)

Clean oil in your motor as is Healthy blood in your heart. GOTTA HAVE IT! ;-)

Check the coupler from the 3000 pipe to the Throttle body...mine looked like this: (it was fine at idle, but boost would force it open, and start leaking, couldn't tell it was cracked unless you looked at it VERY closely.)

I took the 3000 pipe apart, and there it was.. laying there loose as Jenna Jameson; my silicone coupler.. It wasnt torn, it looked as if it was tight, but as soon as I went to loosen the bolts from the clamp, they were already loosened.
I bought a new coupler and replaced the old one sit is was deformed from the heat. I went out and I boosted again normally =]. THANKS ALOT BRO! You saved me! I owe you one..

While tampering with the 3000 pipe, I took out one of the plug wires, and my plugs are submerged in oil... =[ So much oil that you can only see the head of the plug... I plan on taking everything off, changing the plugs and wires, and changing the oil. Im going to sap out every bit of oil that's in there and dry it out. I wanna know how the oil got in there.. Maybe I need a valve cover gasket?
