okay, i have a brand new Dell (keep your opinions to yourself, it was cheap!), with wifi built in...

I also bought a wireless router...

what do i need to get on the internet WITHOUT any wires connected to my computer(s)?

it appears i need another computer hooked up to the router to give off the signal needed to login..

both my computers have built in wireless cards and i can get them on a network, but the network doesnt allow me to access the internet..

im wondering is there ANYWAY to go COMPLETELY wireless, as in NO cords connected to my computers, if so what do you guys recommend?

cause im sending this stupid router back if i need to have it hooked up (which defeats the fucking purpose of going wireless in the 1st place)...

you need to wire a computer into the router only to set up the router's settings. Once that is done you can leave the router unplugged from any ethernet cables to your computer(s), and use the wifi. Hope thats clear enough

sounds good, but once i do that, it tells me there's an error in the settings, after i select all the options, and it does it on both my computers, and im 100% sure everything's hooked up just as it tells me to..

U have everything you need. The connections go like this..

1. Wireless Router connects to your hi-speed internet connection
There will be a port on the back of the router that has a label that says
either WAN or INTERNET . Thats where the network cable from
the hispeed internet connection goes.

2. If you have a CABLE MODEM from the cable compay. Then you most likely will have to power off the cable modem for a few min, They dont like changeing what they are connected to.

3. Power on the modem from whoever you get hi-speed from.

4. Power on the ROUTER. as long as your modem is set to auto give the IP information it should work.

5. Now that the router is on. You should see a "NEW NETWORK" on your wireless laptop. It will most likely be the name of the router you purchased. Connect to that. Once you are connected you should be able to surf.

6. Now you have an OPEN wireless network meaning your Nabors could use your wireless for free.. There are some settings in the router that you use to protect it. Basically it will set a password needed to connect wirelessly. Once you can surf you can login to the router to turn on the WEP.

Get surfing first then if you need help protecting it let us know. Post the brand of router, that will help.

For any other computer in the house you just need to get a wireless network card for them. Either internal or USB versions are available.

Good Luck!

its a netgear..

i can set up my network, and my other computer detects it, and even my psp..

but what happens is i cant accesss the internet through the network, so it's pretty much useless..

i have everything hooked up in sequence, the way you said it, but still i cant access internet, only send out an "empty signal"...

Did you power down the modem from the cable or phone company? Are you DSL or CABLE. When I setup here with a Cable modem I allways have to cut power to the cable modem for allmost 10 min. The modems seem to lock to the pc it was first attached to. Powering off for 10min or so seems to reset this.

If you are DSL and your PC has to log into the DSL then there is some more steps to setup. If your hi-speed connection has any type of LOGIN process that process has to be duplicated with the router.

It sounds like one of those 2 problems.

its DSL and it ask me to power down and connect then re-do, and it works fine at that point...

it detects my internet settings as a PPoPe (or something like that), and it asks for an IP, either search or static. I've enter my IP, that didnt work, then i've done the 2nd option and that doesnt work either...

I've entered all the possible options and it still wont let me access the net through the network...

hey JD, do you have AIM or yahoo, let me IM you through my sidekick as i try to figure this out...

Linksys was good enough for CISCO systems to buy them, that says something right there.

As for Netgear, I have never had much love for them, but they are cheap. Currently my works about 80% of the time, if it starts getting a lot of traffic through it, it will freeze up. Also it doesn't like to play nice with other computers if you turn the SSID broadcast off (important for security). It works ok for me, but I wouldn't recommend them to someone that doesn't want to have to fiddle with it every now and then.
