Window motor problem

Hey everybody, I'm having trouble with my window motor. One day, the passenger side window would not go back up after I had rolled it down. I had recently replaced the switch, so I assumed it was the motor. Since then, I have acquired a few different motors, and they did not work after I connected it. On all of the motors, including the original, when I connect them, and press the up button on the switch, nothing happens. But when I press the down button, the motor works. I now believe all of the motors are good and it's something in the wiring. If anybody knows how I can figure out what the problem is, that would be great. Winter's on it's way, and I want the dang window up. Thanks.

There is a very good chance that your passenger window switch is bad. Some people have taken these switches apart then cleaned the contacts and all is well. You could also try electrical contact cleaner on the switch and you might be lucky and get it to work that way. If you have no luck with your current switch you could try and find a used switch on this forum or you can get them on Ebay as well. I would also check the condition of the master driver switch as I have found that it can cause problems with the passenger side as well.

the drivers side switch runs through the passenger switch then to the window motor. try cleaning the passenger switch.

i used to have the same problem but i have recently rewired the switches and it seems to work fine now.

Ok, so I mangaed to get the switch apart. Two of the four contact points were a little black, so I cleaned them off with electrical cleaner. But after trying the switch with the motor again, it still does not work. Only down, not up. Any more ideas anyone? Thanks

Hook the motor right to a battery and if it goes up/down the motor is good... Sounds like a switch to me, I had the same problem.

Driver and pass switchs replaced and all is good for me.

I have the exact same problem right now. The drivers side master switch doesn't work at all for the pass side window, and the pass window switch will only go down not up. I jumped the window motor to get the window back up so I know the motor is good. I'm at the same place you are, trying to figure out if there is a damaged or lose wire somewhere, or if it's an issue with one or both of the window switches. It's frustrating as hell!

I am shaking my head in disbeleif at the bad information posted in this thread by so many people. If you are going to do any electrical testing at least invest in a test light and ohm/voltmeter. Both of these items can be purchased for $10-15. These two tools will save you much time and money as Shiffer has found out with his numerous motors and switches.

Also, why would anyone suggest removing a questionable working switch and test it with another questionable working switch? That has to be the most ignorant thing I have ever heard. If you are going to do your diagnosing by swapping parts at least do it with known good working parts. Not a part you found in the salvage yard the looks better than yours.

i do have an electrical tester, and with the help of my dad and jetjock, did some tests on the switch. but it did not lead to anything definative. and i didnt scrape my contacts on concrete, but with a nail file. it seemed to help a little bit. i would have liked to just get brand new switches, but toyota charges a fortune for them, and the switches im using now came from a member here on sm.
