Window goes down but not up?

Alright guys so I have an 88 Turbo (build thread coming verrrrry soon :icon_bigg) and the passenger window seems to have a mind of its own. It will ALWAYS roll down, however it VERY selectively does up. If I hold the window button down for 20 minutes it will roll up...and it usually does if its only rolled a few inches now. It only works from the drivers door. Car has an immaculate interior and is pretty low mileage. My guess is a bad wire or faulty relay. Community please help me!

Does it roll up fine from the passenger side?

If yes it's prolly switchs contacts. Just remove clean and install.

doesn't roll up at all from the passenger side. how would I go about cleaning the switch contacts. sorry for the noob question

Definitely not alone, I share this same issue. I removed my door panel and checked for anything odd or out of place. The grease on the rail (the x-frame that lifts the window) was a bit dry and crusty, so I got as much dielectric grease on there as I deemed reasonable. Fixed it for the most part, but yesterday, it happened again.

3p suggested that my regulator might also be bad. That would really suck in my case due to copious amounts of dynamat on the door...

Anyway, this is why I still maintain that I prefer crank windows. SO many potential issues, pretty much completely avoided, AND they are lighter. Not like the car is so big I can't reach over and roll the window down/up from the driver seat...

You just take the switch off an pull it apart and you will see the contacts. Clean them up an put some dielectric grease in there.

OMG if anyone ever invents manual rolldown mk3 window I will pay a lot of money for them LOL I have the same electrical problem. And I want lighter.

There's really not much weight to be saved by going manual. Maybe 5-10lbs between both doors. It's basically the weight of the motors. Which isn't much.

No diagram. Pull door panel off. Unscrew switch from back side. Take switch apart. There's nothing to it.

Go over to the driver side control switch, pry that little white box open on the back of the switch open and look to see any kind of rust. Be careful because when something that looks like a bent piece of metal falls out, and it will, you'll need to put it back or the windows won't work at all.

check under those little bent pieces and put some dielectric grease after cleaning.

it should work that way, this same problem happened to me a few months ago. i bought a new window motor and everything... turns out the fix was free -_-

After fiddling with it I got the drivers side passanger switch to work. I just popped the button off and manually did the switch. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show what I'm on about. I'm yet to try it with my passenger side switch and am yet to find a way to get it to work with the switch, at least I needn't worry about the sprinklers getting my car wet in the morning

Alright so here is what I did as a resolution to my problem on the drivers side, still need to do it on the passenger side. I still need to find a way to work with it all in tact.

First thing I did was pry the switch cover off. This I did with my nail, a screw driver or anything that will fit behind it

This is what I had after popping it off

Then I pulled the switch down until it popped off. It takes a little force but it worked fine multiple times for me.

This is what I was left with

To make the window go up I pushed the little white part on the switch. And it stayed up, however it got stuck like this

The window went up but it won't go up with the button back on.

Anyway I popped the button back on and am now trying to figure out the passenger side. Any ideas on how to male the button work?

We have to go deeper...

I ended up taking that off as well on my car and cleaning the contacts under the switch. More often then not in our cars, that's the issue. Mine work like a charm now. I did have fun trying to get the copper contact strips back in, so have fun with that. They do make contact cleaner for this by the way

This worked for me however I may have to do what jj and others suggested for my passenger side
