i feel ya poodles. i know the F1 cars have quite a bit of sidewall too. i know youre right, you need sidewall to actually have a car that can stick in the corners. more sidewall tends to make a more predictable break-away at the limits of adhesion; being more forgiving at the limit. whereas, lower profile tires are inversly proportionate to that concept. most of the road race cars that i can recall have moderate sidewall, abou 3-4 inches of sidewall. ranging from GT1/GT2/GT3 cars, LMP1/2, F1, even the SCCA pro cars have moderate sidewalls. no real race cars that i can think of have ultra low profile tires like a 305/25/19 would. hell, my 255/35/18 has too low of a profile for my liking. the ride is harsh but i have yet to make it break away... at least its on the front and would turn into understeer.

i think it also helps in a straight line too...a sidewall that flexes a bit (not enough to notice like on a drag radial though) would absorb acceleration and deceleration better than a small sidewall, that may cause loss of traction rather than absorbing some energy into the tire..... so the larger sidewall might hold traction under harsh throttle and brake application better than a small sidewall.

i suppose an exaggerated example would be a huge drag wheel with a 6 inch sidewall...compared to a huge wheel with one inch of sidewall... same diameter overall. the 6in sidewall is going to absorb the shock of takeoff much better - and you can even see it when the ripples appear.

hopefully that made sense.

Honestly, I'm waiting for the Tweel to come to market...

no air, the parts that hold it together can all be fine tuned to allow as much flex as needed, grip surface can be made however they want, ect...

It's lighter too...

I don't mean to play devil's advocate, but there is a limit to any performance advantage from going to a larger wheel. Many times you could get BETTER performance from going to a far better tire design...

oh yeah i totally believe that...

and the tweel...is that the one with little rubber fins inside the tire rather than being supported by air?

Hey Fig: These are the 2006 Mustang GT wheels mounted on my car.
View attachment 17916

I had to put 245 45 17 tires on them for clearance issues. Paid $300 for them with new tires(came with Pirelli 235 55 17), and another $300 for the tires I have now(got a $200 trade in for the Pirelli's). The rims probably weigh really close to the stock sawblades; if they are heavier, its not by much. The difference in tire sizes is where any real weight issues will come in.

hmm cool. thanks. I might look into some mustang rims.

however now i'm not even concerned with new wheels anymore as I might have rod knock. If I do I'm not sure what will happen. I might have to sell the supra.... :(

poodles.. i know the feeling. the new wheels and tires i put on my ram were freaking heavy. 265/75/17's, Load range E on some chrome-clad Steelies from an 05 Ram... If my truck wasnt so close to the ground, i woulda slipped a disc trying to lift them on the Axle!

btw, when i changed out my rims on the front, the sawblade barely felt heavier than my 18x9 volk w/ the 255/35 on it. however, my 17x7.5" ROH was DEFINITLY heavier than my Volk. i wish my roommate didnt break my scale, i could get soem ballpark weights.
