Correct, shifter housing is different (has an extension housing on it to move it back), unsure if that part could be swapped or if the cases are different.

You'd need to change the bellhousing, shifter extension housing, and speed sensor out for speedometer driven gear.

At the least.

You may need to swap other things as well.

I've tried this - the problem you run into is to get everything to mount up correctly, you have to swap out the tail housing -- that's when you find out that the bearing sizes are different between the MKIII W58 and the MKIV W58.

I've tried it - it's not worth the grief that you have to go through to make it work. Just find a W58 from a MKIII.

From an SC standpoint, the later model SCs have an external shifter housing that is slightly longer than the earlier SC models and MKIIIs. The earlier SC models have an internal shift linkage so those might work. Bellhousing is still different for a 7m so that will have to be swapped too.
