On a 7" Rim.......255's are already PRETTY damned wide.

For a typical 7" rim, I'd think 215's to 225's would be ideal. (Probably steering more towards 225).

Of course, you can put bigger....but your sidewalls can only fold in so much before it starts becoming dangerous/ridiculous looking.

Yea I wouldn't go over a 235 on a 7'' rim. I've seen 245's on sawblades before, handles like a nightmare.

i dunno how true that is, i had 255s in the rear and 245s up front on my sawblades.. it rode really well, didnt pull or anything, extremely smooth also..

I used to have 245's all the way around and it wasn't eactly perfect but it worked. But honestly any time you are going really wide or too narrow on a wheel you are much more like to have a problem with wear or something else.

Toyota put 225's on the 7" rim

Mazda put a 245's on a 8" rim

I would trust the manufacturers. If you need more traction get a wider wheel to throw a bigger tire on.

^Trusting the manufacturers, indeed. :icon_wink

Really wide tire on a skinny rim will cause terrible handling (the wider, the worse it gets), safety issues with a massive flexing sidewall and, IMHO, looks stupid as hell. ;)

Really skinny tires on a wide rim (AKA Drifter tires :D), Will, also cause a flattened sidewall, but will curve in so there will be less tire touching the ground.

Either way, going one way or the other too much is only going to hurt your tires and your wallet.

Read the literature from the tire manufacturers...they publish the range of rim widths each tire has been designed to work with, and which one is the ideal width they designed it around. Don't rely on what one maker says, as every one and even every model of tire tends to be a little different. That said, I don't remember seeing a 255 performance tire that was good down to a 7 inch width. There are some 245's that are rated for it (Michelin Pilot Sport comes to mind), and handle quite well. Again, it's about what the tire maker intended the tire to do, and they publish the information. Everything else is speculation.

did anyone else ever stop to think why would you downgrade your rims ?_? sawblades are wider then 7 inch...

huh?

and what bg said. look at the range specified by the tire maker. not all tires are the same size since they are measured sidewall to sidewall. a tire w/ a rounded sidewall will not be as wide as a tire w/ a square sidewall.

also to note, i have 255's on sawblades for drag. they fit, but the side wall bubbles out a little much for good cornerning. also being on a smaller rim you dont get full contact patch either.

I have the stock saw blades and I went from some older 225 Goodyear eagles to 245 Dunlops and there was a little bit of road feel loss (very little) but it handles SOOOOO much better.
