I want a regular old tape style dip stick. Not the wire with the lead chunk on the bottom thats impossible to tell how much oil you have over 5qts.

+1 thats the one i want! i hate my dipstick, i can read it, but its so much easier when you have the little hole that filled with oil so you know its full.

I've got an 89 with the stock dipstick, and I hate it. It's the cylinder one with the cross scores in it. Impossible to read. Which one is the flat one with the holes in it, like a regular dipstick?

Are the two different version the flat steel and the steel cable? If so I much prefer the flat steel version in my '88 N/A. Are there any other differences between pre89 and post89?

I have some generic dipstick for my car, with no writing :(

So what's the difference between the both besides being able to read? Such as, it's easier to get it around an aftermarket exhaust manifold/turbo setup or...?

Have a look at the picture. This is the newer style dipstick, many people have this confused with the ones that came in the later cars. To my knowledge, you cannot get this dipstick without purchasing one from Toyota.
