Why paint prep is so important

Three years ago I bought my Supra with a BHG. The price was right, the body straight and it had just been frehly painted. Little did I know what was in store. The first indicator something was wrong came a few months later when I was using a pressure washer and half the paint came off of the rear license plate surround! The pics tell the rest of the story. So now instead of being able to enjoy all of the engine work that I did I am having to take it all apart and sand off all of the junk paint. I am thinking the Lexus Saphire Blue would be a nice color change but would be interested in other suggestions.

Typical of it not bonding properly to plastic or urethane because they're morons, and the edge chipping is again, from being morons lol

Dunno what's worse, that or having a partial respray with cheap clear that peels off in sheets...

I have the same problem. Some one Earl Schiebed my car.

I've seen a lot of car from there that were perfect. All locations are not the same though, so the one yours was done at might just be shit...

Every Maaco, Earl Sheib, Econo Paint, and other cheap ass places like that have the ability to do the job correctly and use very high quality paints. You're going to pay for it though. They lure you in with their $299 complete car special, and if that's what you want then that's what you're going to get. Don't expect it to last longer than six months though. Those cheap paint jobs are only to make a car look semi pretty so you can sell it to the next sucker.

Word. It's a good idea to ask for a walk around of the shop, see how clean it is(and their employee's, lol), how the lighting is, if they have a heated(up to 170 degrees or whatever)paint booth. The $5000 I was quoted started making a lot more sense today when I went to look at my car. Soooo much crap to take off and paint separately: The mudguards and stoneguards extend up to the belt line and need to be partially painted...the quarter-window trim is next to impossible to take off without pulling the glass...The front bumper sits so flush with the fenders it has to be taken off to get a separare paint line...The three piece spoiler...etc...LOL! The lifetime warranty could come in very handy too.

Take pics too, for proof it was done right, should you want to sell or get in an accident and need to prove it's worth.

BTW, I paid Maaco over $3000 to do a "good job" on my Jetta and they still fucked me over. I'd only go there if like multiple people I know have recommended one.

wow i didnt know macco charges 3,000 for a paint job. my only opinion about that is there just trying to get the car out of there and on to the next one proubly cutting corners, but thats just my opinion. I would paint an engine bay and whole car for 3,000 or less with the price of paint included.

looks like a cheapo maaco job.

My car was painted by macco for 600 bucks 3-4 years ago and my car looks mint. The difference is me and my father did all the prep work/disassembly and gave them a bare car that just needed to be sprayed. Just because a place sprays a car for cheap doesn't mean its junk. You have to prep the car properly for paint, when you dont it will come out like shit no matter who did it. I towed my car to them looking like MK3Pizzadriver's car.

Yeah, I was just being Sterotypical, and I have that thought stuck in my mind." You get for what you pay for. So, every crappy paint job I see, I automaticlly think of Earl, Macco, E.T.C. I didn't know they offer a premuim service, I just thought they were a "in/out down and dirty style shop. As a matter of fact I don't even know who painted my car, it was like that when I got it. So, It was unfair for me to "label" Earl, Macco as "crappy" quality.
