So, I just went to get a new key for my Explorer. Now I like to have authentic keys. My Supra key says Toyota. My Explorer key should say Ford on it. Well, the ford dealership only sells generic keys and they're $25. Whats up with that? $25 for a key? Wait, it gets worse...

Now, the parts guy couldn't cut the key. I gotta go to service for that. Now my explorer is a 2000, and if you don't know that means there is a little microchip in the key. You can't start the car without it. So, I get to the service department, and they say it's gonna take an hour to program and cut the key... and cost $77.00. So I laid it all out and it's gonna be $112 with tax in order to get a spare key. When I bought my Supra, we special ordered the toyota blank and the whole thing cost me $13.

I had to post this here, cause the people on the explorer web forums I found aren't too intelligent. I don't feel like talking to them... ever!

Sorry for wasting your time! Thanks for reading!

My 2000 Chrysler 300 had the microchip and it was about that price for replacements, but they at least had the Chrysler emblem in them. Ford sucks:icon_neut

all chipped keys are like that man. I wonder if the idea was initially thought up to make more money on keys :)

uhh no they are not. read my post. my jeep has a proceedure for programming a new key. you get your new key cut, go out to your car and press a bunch of buttons and youre done.

Yeah that sucks man. GM has a better system at renewing keys with your vin number. not sure what ford does but they seem disorganized...

and fords don't suck. My beater is a crown vic. 250000kms and I barely change the oil. Now thats reliability

lol, I agree. She'll be getting her oil changed this weekend for the 1st time in a while, and that probably wouldn't have happened if the crank wasn't coming out...:hsugh: (and no, the crank coming out isn't because of an oil issue)

guess I'll see what condition the bearings are in though and see how well these engines actually do hold up. you better believe we're going to break in the bottom end properly, and keep up routine maintenace

ok [/threadjack]

I think I bought genuine Toyota keys for my car for $6 each, and they looked up my lock code and cut them for free. This was astonishing to me that it was that cheap and simple at the overpriced, crappy Toyota parts counter we have here in town.
