Suze: It's more engine economy if the mixtures are rich it washes the cylinder and wears the rings/bores.

Burntz: Yep it's just having a little mechanical empathy and NOT beating the motor to death.

ALL of the clearences we use during a build are designed to give the correct running clearance when the motor is at operating temp.

Due to the different materials in our Motors they take time to stabilise not to mention the rest of the running gear so It's important to make sure EVERYTHING is up to temp before hammering it hard.

In extreme cases if a motor is worn it can have piston slap when cold until it's warm then the noise goes away, if you get on it hard you run the risk of breaking a skirt off the piston below the Oil ring groove :( (One of my first major part failures way back in a 5.0L V8)
