while i was installing my walbro fuel pump, i noticed that the inside of my gas tank is quite nasty. there's rust and crap and the strainer on the stock pump was disgusting. so, i'm wondering if i should pay $125+tax to get it cleaned or try and find an aftermarket one? if anyone knows where to get aftermarket tanks, please lmk, cause i have no idea. OR if anyone has any ideas on how they cleaned out their tanks themselves, i'm also interested.

thanks!

You could always find a clean stock tank. Thats what I've done in the past with nasty tanks, just swapped for a clean one. If you find someone local parting out a car you can get one for a few bucks if you do the labor. I know I'd take 20 bucks for you to work on a parts car for 30 minutes.

this may be a bit of speculation but would puting higher octane fuel in there help clean it out a little bit?... or adding something like z-max, from what ive seen with z-max the stuff is suppose to work pretty well.

nothing but a good cleaning will help. elbow grease, you know. we've discussed this before, cleaning it by filling the tank with certain cleaners and agitating it. throw it on an engine stand and crank it over and over with a large handful of nuts and bolts and washers.

i don't mind the idea cleaning myself, but i have a couple questions for you...
how the hell do you mount a gas tank to an engine stand?:aigo:
and more importantly, what would be the best/safest cleaning agents to use that wont dilute/ruin the fuel that i put in it when i'm all done?

I replaced a rusted up one with another used one, which was very clean. Got the tank for free, just had to remove it.

Seems like if it's already rusted up and things are flaking around in the inside, I wouldn't trust it much (even after all that cleaning/work).

you could probably use ratchet straps or tie downs to attach it to the stand if you've got a plate designed to be spun on the stand.

as for cleaners, that depends on what kind of stuff you've got to clean up. acetone, cleaners with sodium hydroxide (organic solvents) like super clean, heavy duty degreasers, or just buy a few gallons of carb cleaner and pour in there. the trick is to get something strong to clean it, then let it evaporate. most of the cleaners like acetone will evaporate in seconds, and carb cleaner won't hurt the fuel when mixed in. definitely look into this more, and i'd fill the fuel tank with water then drain to make sure all vapors are out if you're going to be anywhere near sparks or flame. just take the normal precautions and use your head, and it shouldn't be too dangerous.

and for reconditioning, i'd use POR15. heard great things about that.

when did u change your avatar? and for whatever reason i just figured out what your SN is... lol one of those nights

changed it when i was searching a few nights ago, the pic is pretty cool. and shows supras can drift. and i always get confused when people change their avatars too... i think there different people sometimes! :biglaugh:
and my SN is my real name backwards...

if i could, i would go with a fuel cell, as long as i could cut up the trunk to make it look "stock" and that way you could add the battery and a methanol injection kit and also "sink" them into the trunk area so they would be flush and hidden.

POR-15 makes some good shit. I don't know anything about the tank reconditioners, but my POR-15 coating has kept rust off of my exhaust manifold and turbo hotside for 3 years.

If there's rust forming on your intake manifold, you've got some serious problems. Or just some crazy chemical rain in AL that rusts aluminum. ;)

like others have said, just get a replacement tank from a clean car. i got a tank a few years back from texas, and it looked brand new inside.

I know for DSMs they make a new fuel cell that uses the stock fill location, sits in the stock location and uses the stock level sender. Maybe with enough interest, we can get a vendor here to make one like that.
