Who is using r12? Who is using R134a?

just last month my r-12 suddenly quit working one day, i took it to a shop that had "r-12" and he had to rebuild one of my lines to the compressor, filled the system and charged my 240.00. he told me i still had a leak around the compressor and it was most likely the gasket under the plate held on by 4 allen bolts, so i ordered the compressor rebuild kit from watson (38.00) and replaced that gasket yesterday. so now i have to take it back and have it vacuumed and filled, hoping he doesn't find another leak. he told me it may last a year or a day, well, it lasted about an hour. for the last 6.5 years i've had my car, i had to put 2 cans of 12 in it, so it did leak about every 3 years i guess.

another local a/c shop told me it would cost 95.00 to convert over to 134, and i asked him what he was going to change and he mentioned nothing. i asked about seals and the dryer and he wondered where i was getting my info from, so i don't think he will ever get my business.

Use R134a here, works awesome. The car was retrofitted by the previous owner, and I've had it for a long time since then.

+1 my AC was retrofitted by the previous owner and it worked awesome, I just decided to remove it from my car since I rarely used it.

I use r12 and it blows at 40-44F in the hot Florida Summer at idle. When you get cruising it can creep below 40F. Luckily my system only needed a charge but it took me quite some time to find a ac shop that still reclaimed r12. I asked about the 134 conversion. The ac guy looked at my condenser and noticed my 3 condenser fans. (7mgte auto tranny)... His opinion was that our condensers were on the small side for 134a. Without the 3 fan setup on the auto tranny gte the ac temp would vary or rise significantly at idle or creeping stop and go traffic. Even with the 3 fan setup it would be borderline. I don't think he was trying to sell me expensive r12 either. He had just run out of r12 a few days back and he didn't try to push me into doing the 134 conversion. He took a chance that I could have done the 134 conversion done elsewhere.

Still running R-12 here, blows 41-47 in 100+ weather (On low), the temperature would rise when you increase the fan speed. The only problem that I can see with R-12 is finding it. It runs at lower pressure than R-134a and seems to cool better (In my experience). Running my big 'ol clutch fan (Just rebuilt the clutch) and one small A/C fan. That thing runs like a freight train and keeps my engine cool in stop and go traffic with the A/C running.

Hey im pretty interested in that.. A quote I got to add a lb. or so of r12 to my system was $120.. If the autofrost refill kit is $60 that seems like a better deal..I wonder if it can be mixed with r12.

I wouldn't mix it personally but someone with more knowledge might be able to help. My system was empty because it was pulled off another car. I just did the cheap Walmart kit for 134a and it's working pretty damn good. My guess is that it would be working better if I pulled a vacuum (was planning on it but my vacuum pump died when I turned it on :()

Checking for leaks now, if there aren't any I will redo it with vacuum, check the oil and refill. Then I expect it'll be top notch!

Not really, its fine. Just not as efficent as r12.

LOL wat? 65 degrees is ok? If you're talking about what the CC goes to...then of couse it's ok. If you're talking about the temp coming out of the vents then clearly something isn't working properly IMO.

That's why I added my example: I did a VERY quick and VERY dirty conversion, been running at 41-43 degrees out the vent, even on 100+ degree days, for a month now.

EDIT: Yes, at idle. Although, it does take 15 minutes or so of idling for it to start getting into the 40's.

Thats why, mine is with the windows open at idle for a few minutes. Of course itll get colder if you let it recirculate and chill off.. But thats like saying If I was below sea level 10000 feet My stock supra would have 500hp.
