If you can't rev match I bet your syncros in your transmission are shot. Yes, every manual transmission should be able to rev. match to shift gears ;)

engine speed must match the next gear's speed. if this is done then you can slip it into your desired gear without using the clutch.

Im fairly sure its an old trucker tirck. i guess when youve got 20+ gears, clutch gets really annoying.i usually do that when im lazy and on the highway. The easiest way for me to describe it, is when its time to shift, slowly let off the throttle, pull back on the shifter slightly and let its slide into the next gear. But youve got to get it into gear before your revs drop to low. Downshifting, do the same thing with the throttle, but once you get it in neutral, give it some revs and put slight pressure on the gear your looking for. when the revs are right, it will slide right into gear.

good thing to learn though incase your clutch goes out. with my car i tap the gas holding the shifter towards nuetral, it pops in then get it up to 3-4000 rpm release pedal with stick pointed toward desired gear, usually pops right in.

its definitely easier on my mom's 03 protege than my supra, and its easier in my dads 89 mazda pickup too.

I do it sometimes on my DD, but mainly only in higher gears (3-4-5)
Never tried it on the Sup though.

yesit can be done. but we have a clutch for a reason so i use it. Unless im driviing for work than i dont. I drive a big kenworth dumptruck t900 model and thats something u dont use a clutch often for. unless your car will really be eating up a clutch(which in that case upgrade lol) just use the clutch and have fun

truckers typically shift without using the clutch because most heavy duty transmissions do not have synchros, requiring double clutching or rev matching anyway. In a car, it is generally pointless unless you are so lazy that it is a chore to move your left foot, and in that case, you may as well drive an automatic.

Also, the lower the revs, the easier it is to shift without the clutch(which is one of the reasons it is so easy to do on a diesel).

I've done it a few times, usually I get a tiny grind so I tend not to..

you gotta give it a quick rev when down shifting, otherwise the revs will drop too quick......

my dad does it in the trucks he drives (18 wheelers), he said the clutch is only used in 1st and reverse...

Should you do it? IMHO, no.

Replacing a clutch is easier than replacing syncros...

agreed. i do it once in a while when im showing off to my non car knowledgeable friends but other than that i never do it just because i dont have the need to rebuild my transmission more than it should be.

Its not any easier, you just arent worried about your parents cars getting F'd up as much as your supra...

this man knows what he is talking about..... tractor trailor transmissions dont have synchros....thats why you hear them grind gears all the time when they drive threw town....

i used to work on dump trucks and grew up around rigs....you only clutch when you need to start moveing.

i can shift without a clutch....my master cyclinder went out on my 86 toyota pickup and i drove it around all day before i fixed it lol....i had to shut the truck off at every stop though and start it in gear.

doing this is a good way to blow a gear or a whole transmission if you dont know what your doing....if you have the revs just right the gears will slip right in smooth as a babies ass.

Yes on Frightliners and Internationals, but Volvo's are a b!tch.
Like everyone else has been saying only to start in 1st or reverse
besides not having syncros except for the 6 speed 5 tons we've got
you'll develop a huge left calf/sore knees if you clutched every gear.
In cars though I practiced on my old 87 lude didn't go to good so I stopped
by my clutch was slipping bad all the time so i had to keep doing it but
hills are a B!tch.

If your' going to do it you shouldn't use any more force then 2 fingers to slide it into gear
and just match the revs with speed and time it right.
