I am swapping motors (eventually) and need to do the headgasket on it. I have the ARP studs and want to get an hks MHG but am unsure of which to get? 1.2 2 or 3mm? all of them say the bore is 86mm but stock im reading its 83. Can anyone help me so I make the right decision? thanks guys!

Thanks for the lazy link. I was waiting for that to happen :p I already read it and it still doesn't help me. Coming off of a stock motor, which headgasket size do you guys usually put on yours?

The correct one after measuring the Head and Block to determine how much material has been removed.

Ok, so regardless, I am going to have to have the head and block machined if I get a new MHG? If I am running stock boost, just basic bolt ons, is the stock Headgasket ok? i know everyone harps about getting a new one but I dont plan on increasing the boost or performance really for a while.

Also, thanks for the help guys. I know this is the number 1 noob question asked and its a "rolls eyes" kinda topic. A lot of this goes over my head and I just want to do it right. I went from a Cobra to this, so a lot of the issues are issues I never delt with with the Cobra so I am learning, much like you had to. Thanks again!

If your staying stock and running no more than 8lbs just get an OEM Headgasket
and arp studs, torque down to 80-85lbs and you will be good.

Now if later on down the road you plan on doing performance upgrades then you mise
well do the MHG now....

But too answer your other question yes you have to have your head and block machined if you want a mhg.
If not it will make a huge mess thats not even worth it...

After taking it too the machinist just tell him what your gonna be doing and what headgasket size your gonna use then he should know what to do from there.

Later, later down the road... I will, thats maybe a year from now. I just want to get it on the road reliably before I start thinking about power. my motor has the arp studs i can use, I can get an OEM gasket for the new motor and use those studs. That should be reliable for driving. I am not going to completely hammer this car. I'll get on it here and there but it will be stock boost, etc... I just cant afford to get the motor to and from a shop to have the block and head resurfaced, then the cost of the gasket itself... it adds up and I know thats the best route but if I can gave it be reliable with stock boost and arp studs and OEM gasket, that is a much better route for me till I can begin to build it up more.

a new stock one will hold up to some increased power.... but if you are going to be looking for 350+ i would go with a mhg... yea i know people have made more power than 350 with a stock but its better to be safe than sry....

Oh and if you cant find some one that reputable to machine your head and block contact suprarich... (Here is his website) he is in northern ohio. I have seen his work and its beautiful... and he has a torque plate to bore and hone correctly :naughty: also i you decide to take the block and head up you can stop by in lima and hang out with some other lima supra owners.

Do first as IJ recommended. Have the machinist tell how much he taken off (materials). From there you order the correct headgasket thickness. There is a Sticky on this. Instead of going with a HKS MLS HG just get a cometic.

Thanks guys. I think I am just going to get an OEM with with the ARP studs i have for now. My goal is to just get this running sound on the road and then this summer, maybe next depending on time and money, I can dig back into it and upgrade. I don't plan on going above 350 maybe not even 300 before a year is up. Gonna be a lot of care and tuning to do before I do that anyway so I will take care of her and not hammer it and an OEM gasket with the ARP studs should do the trick. Now where to get that. :)

Thanks a ton Indy, you've been a lot of help to me bro

well if i were you i would still take the engine to a machinist and have them check for being warped....

so are you ordering a jdm 7m or rebuilding the one that was in the car? either way replace the HG... have them checked for straightness

*** edit **** lol i fail at reading the first post.... yea deff take the engine block and head to be swaped into your car to a machinist to check for warpage... then from there you can decide what you want to do... if it is all within spec then a stock will do... if it isnt then have them decked and run a mhg... and how much they take off will decide on which hg to order =)

LMAO @ 50,000 miles :umno:

LMAO at an ignorant comment based on the fact that I am new to the forums. I am buying the motor off of my friend who was a foreign exchange student that stayed with me in highschool. He was the one that got me into Supras. It was his dad's car that was garaged and kept stock and he gave it to Kazu who has decided to do a 2j swap and is helping me out big time. Anything else you find humorous? Go trash someone else's thread. I'm simply trying to learn more about the motor. PM me if you have any other smartass remarks.

Off Topic
Well, by saying you ordered one. I think he assumed that you got it from a importer. If that's the case; then you have no idea of its mileage and its condition. Which is why he responded the way he did..

Id also call BS on 50k [actual mileage] being on a JDM imported motor.

Just something to think about. =p
